Marquette City Fire Department

Marquette City Fire Department The Marquette City Fire Department, while steeped in tradition, has made great strides to become a progressive and modern life saving organization.

The community experiences fewer fire incidents than the State average due to comprehensive Fire Prevention, Code Enforcement, and education programs. The Fire Department serves the community through its two locations. The main office is housed in Station #1 at 418 South Third Street and Station # 2 is located in the historic fire house at 723 North Front Street. Marquette fire personnel respond to

many different types of emergencies and are trained in many different fields of rescue: High Angle Rescue (cliff rescue), Auto Extrication, Hazardous Materials, Confined Space Rescue, Emergency Medical Services (Paramedic level), Ice & Water Rescue and Terrorist Threat Responses. Marquette Fire has “mutual aid” agreements with the surrounding townships and participates in many community education and safety programs. In addition to fire prevention, fire fighting and emergency rescue, the Marquette City Fire Department also administers the city’s Building Inspection Program and is responsible for enforcing the city’s rental code ordinance, and the entire beachfront safety program. In 2012, the City's lifeguards made the transition to operating under the Fire Department. The City's lifeguards are trained by Fire Department personnel following American Red Cross Standards in Waterfront Lifeguarding. Such training includes CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Our swim area buoys are in the water, and our Lifeguards are beginning to prep for the season!
We want to remind everyone that even though the temps may be warming up, the water is still very, very cold. In fact, Lake Superior is actually considered a cold-water lake year-round. Even on the nice summer days ahead hypothermia can set in rapidly. Watch for hypothermic signs from your body like shivering, numbness, balance issues, etc.
Be smart, stay safe, and have fun!

We always enjoy when retirees stop in to say hello and catch up, but today’s visit was something more. Retired MFD Captain (equivalent to a Battalion Chief today) E.J. Porter and his wonderful wife, Ruth, came by! But not for any ordinary visit…

MFD has a long-standing tradition where retiring members keep their helmet, and their spouses receive a necklace from our union. For reasons no one can quite recall, when Captain Porter retired in 2010, neither of those items were received.

A few weeks ago, Captain Porter stopped in and asked if we might still have his old helmet. Unfortunately, we didn’t, and that didn’t sit right with us. At our next union meeting, we unanimously voted to make it right. We ordered the same model helmet and had it prepared to match his original, and we also made sure Ruth received the necklace she should have been given years ago.

Today, we had the honor of presenting those items to them. Several retired and off-duty members who had worked under Captain Porter came in as well, turning the moment into a small, but long overdue, retirement celebration. There were plenty of laughs, stories, and memories shared, just like old times.

Moments like this remind us how strong the bond is in this job.

We wish Captain Porter and Ruth all the best and they are always welcome back at MFD.

Snow & ice can block furnace vents, dryer vents, and fireplace vents, which can cause carbon monoxide to build up in your home. Take a couple of minutes to remove snow from these areas around your home.

❄️🚨❄️🚨❄️🚨❄️🚨

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, and colorless gas and is known as a silent killer. Make sure you have working CO alarms installed in your home. Suspect CO poisoning? Evacuate the area and call 9-1-1 right away.

Friendly reminder:
Sounds like we are in for another wintery treat over the next couple of days.🥶
Storms like this tend to push emergency and utility vehicles to their limits and our response times are decreased quite a bit.

All that being said, we want to send out a reminder about when to call 911 as well as some other resources you can utilize if 911 isn’t the best option.

When to call:
Immediate danger to the life or health of you or others. This includes downed power lines, car accidents, fires, fire/CO alarms, etc. and any medical incident that is untreatable on your own and needs immediate attention.

If you feel that your problem can wait or does not require immediate emergency services, but someone still should be notified. You can utilize the non-emergency line for central dispatch which we will list below so the emergency 911 lines aren’t taken up for someone with an actual emergency.
We are also available to call 24/7 if you have any questions or want to report a non emergent issue.

Non-emergency phone number: 906-475-9912

Thank you for your time and stay safe.

🚨 Public Safety Alert 🚨

The ice in Marquette’s Lower Harbor is NOT safe. We received reports this morning of an individual falling through the ice. Fortunately, they were able to self-extricate and are safe.

Do NOT go out on the ice. Ice conditions and thickness are highly unstable and can change rapidly, even within hours. What looks solid may fail without warning.

For your safety and the safety of first responders, stay off the Lower Harbor ice.

Please take this warning seriously and help keep yourself and others safe. If you have any question, please feel free to reach out to the Marquette City Fire Dept.

Thank you.
