This past week, Chief Capuzzi suffered injuries while working on the training site, on the AAFD station property. He remains hospitalized and his treatment continues, but he is in good spirits.

The article from today's Butler Eagle is attached (but you may not be able to access it if not a subscriber).

President Jason Safreed observed that Chief Capuzzi is receiving the full support of the District, so he and his family can focus on recovery. Chief Capuzzi commented, "I am very thankful to the members of the AAFD, Quality EMS, and Adams Township Police Department for their excellent and timely care, provided to me and my family." In the meantime, fire operations continue under the other line officers.

At 12:40 this morning, Stations 42 and 19 were alerted for a smoke alarm activation on Cypress Ln in Adams Township.

Dispatch was notified by the caller that there was smoke in the residence and quickly upgraded the alarm to a structure fire response including stations 90, 16, 76, and Allegheny stations 185 & 228.

Adams Township police arrived on scene and reported a working fire in the garage.
Engine 42 and Tower 42 arrived on scene and were met with smoke pushing from the garage doors.

While crews began initial fire attack, Engine 19 arrived on scene and laid supply line from the hydrant to Engine 42.

Engine 185-2 arrived on scene and teamed up with Engine 19 to assist with ventilation and overhaul.

With the fire under control the incident was held to 42, 19, and 185.

Crews operated on scene for just over an hour before returning to service.
The bulk of the damage was held to the garage area and the contents of origin, with minimal smoke damage in other areas of the residence.

The cause is currently believed to be a defective power tool battery.

Throwback Time: Cold War era civil defense. Old records from one of our parent companies, Community VFC of Valencia, reveal this letter from the Butler County Civil Defense office from 1956.

Just a few years prior, stations throughout the county acquired their first two-way radios. The first system to radio-alert ("trip out") mutual aid stations was also installed. This was a decade before County Communications ("Control") was established, so the City of Butler Central fire station housed the tone board and handled mutual aid dispatching.

The process underway by this correspondence was to add an additional layer - to enable Central to radio-alert all stations' house sirens in the recognized civil defense signals - ALERT and TAKE COVER - and to distinguish these warnings from the standard fire call signal in the various communities.
