ARREST PRESS RELEASE

Date of Arrest: May 6, 2026

Name of Arrestee: William Bart, 28, Homeless, Marseilles

Charges: Theft, Residential Burglary, Criminal Trespass to Residence, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Reckless Conduct, Unauthorized Possession or Storage of Weapon on Land Supported by Public Funds

On May 6, 2026, Marseilles Police officers responded to a report of a man attempting to steal an off-road motorcycle from a local residence. The suspect fled the scene after being confronted by a witness but was apprehended by officers shortly thereafter and identified as William Bart.

Following his arrest, Bart informed officers that he had personal property stored in the restrooms of a nearby public park. Upon inspection, officers discovered a large quantity of contraband and materials related to suspected narcotics. For public safety, the restrooms were immediately closed pending a decontamination for public safety.

Additionally, Bart was identified via surveillance video as the suspect in a package theft reported earlier that day on Clark Street.

Prior Incident History

Bart has had multiple contacts with the Marseilles Police Department over the last two months. These include arrests for retail theft on March 8 and April 22, as well as a charge of Aggravated Assault on April 23. In all previous instances, Bart was released on a Notice to Appear as the offenses were classified as non-detainable under current statutes.

Following the most recent charges, Bart was transported to the LaSalle County Jail to await a pre-trial hearing.
