⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS REMINDER ⚠️
With the potential for severe weather in our area today, now is the time to prepare and stay informed.
Please take a few minutes to review these important safety tips:
• Monitor trusted weather sources, including local television stations, NOAA Weather Radio, local radio stations, and official National Weather Service updates.
• Sign up for Clark County's Mass Emergency Notification System, Hyper-Reach, to receive severe weather alerts and emergency updates directly to your phone. Do not rely on social media alone for critical warnings.
• Have an emergency preparedness kit ready that includes:
* Flashlights and extra batteries
* Battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio
* Cell phone chargers and power banks
* First aid supplies
* Prescription medications
* Bottled water and non-perishable food
* Important documents and emergency contact information
• Do NOT rely solely on outdoor warning sirens. Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors and may not be heard inside homes, businesses, or while sleeping.
• Keep your cell phone charged and ensure Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are enabled on your device.
• Know where you will take shelter if a warning is issued. The safest location is a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
• If you live in a manufactured or mobile home, identify a sturdier shelter location before storms arrive and have a plan to get there quickly.
• Bring pets indoors before severe weather begins and include pet supplies in your emergency preparedness plans.
• Have a family emergency communication plan so everyone knows where to shelter, how to contact one another, and where to meet if separated.
• Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and those with special needs to ensure they have a way to receive warnings and access shelter if needed.
• Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, decorations, and other loose objects that could become dangerous in strong winds.
• Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather whenever possible.
• Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don't Drown®. Just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the road, and the road beneath the water may be damaged or washed out.
• If power outages occur and traffic signals are not functioning, treat intersections as four-way stops and proceed with caution.
📞 WHEN TO CALL 911:
• Life-threatening emergencies
• Serious injuries
• Fires
• People trapped or in immediate danger
• Active storm-related emergencies requiring immediate police, fire, or EMS response
🚫 DO NOT CALL 911:
• To ask for weather forecasts or warning information
• For general road conditions
• To report routine power outages (contact your utility provider)
• For non-emergency storm information
⛈️ Remember:
• A Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado WATCH means conditions are favorable for severe weather. Stay alert and be prepared to act.
• A Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado WARNING means severe weather is occurring or imminent. Take shelter immediately.
The best time to prepare is before the storm arrives. Stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to act quickly if conditions worsen.
