Today marks the National Day of Prayer where our community gathers at the Historic Courthouse to set time aside to pause and reflect. We also come together to seek wisdom, and to lift up our community, leaders, families, and those facing hardship. The bible was read during this hour with everyone assigned different passages, it was a good afternoon.

These cases are some of the most difficult we handle, not just because of the facts, but because of the lasting impact on these young victims in our community. This sentence reflects the seriousness of the harm done and my commitment to protecting children and holding offenders fully accountable. I am grateful to the investigators and Sheriff’s office who worked tirelessly to ensure justice was served. Please Pray for this victim and family.

Kevin Forrest Barnett Pleads Guilty to 50 Years for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and Possession of Child Po*******hy:

District Attorney Reid McCain today issued a statement recognizing the exceptional work of law enforcement officers and prosecutors following the resolution of a “deeply troubling” aggravated sexual assault of a child and possession of child sexual abuse material case which resulted in the defendant, Kevin Forrest Barnett, receiving a 50 year prison sentence.

“This case represents some of the most difficult and heartbreaking work we are called to do,” said District Attorney Elect Madison Hood. “The well-being of the victim and the unwavering commitment of our law enforcement partners ensured that justice was pursued with diligence and care.”

The investigation involved extensive coordination among multiple agencies, The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, The Harrison County District Attorney’s Office, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Terrell Police Department, and Dallas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force with officers working tirelessly to gather evidence, support the victim, and build a strong case.

Sgt. T.C. Livingston was the lead investigator. McCain said Livingston worked with professionalism and dedication, adding that was critical in holding the offender accountable.

McCain also extended specific recognition to District Attorney Elect Madison Hood, who led the prosecution.

“This was a complex and emotionally challenging case. Hood handled it with skill, compassion, and determination, ensuring that the victim’s voice was heard and justice prevailed.”

The defendant ultimately entered a plea and was sentenced to 50 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

“While no sentence can undo the harm caused, this outcome reflects our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Hood. “We will continue to stand with victims and work relentlessly to ensure those who commit such crimes are held accountable.”

Child abuse is not an easy topic to discuss. Many of us would prefer to believe it doesn’t exist, that our children are always safe and protected. But the reality is abuse happens in every community, not just in large cities, but in small towns and neighborhoods just like ours. I want to take a moment this month to recognize and honor the children who have been impacted by abuse. Their stories matter, and so does our response as a community. AWARENESS is one of our STRONGEST tools. I encourage you to take time to learn the signs of abuse, find ways to support local organizations, and have important conversations with your children/grandchildren even the ones that may feel uncomfortable. Those conversations can make a lasting difference.

When we bring these issues into the light and make it clear that our community is paying attention, we create an environment where victims feel supported to come forward and where those who would harm children know they will be held accountable. Protecting our children is a shared responsibility and together we can make a difference.

The annual Go Blue Day Child Abuse Awareness Month event was held outside of the historic Harrison County Courthouse in Marshall.

Friday is Go Blue Day which is recognized across the state as part of Child Abuse Awareness Month, a time to stand together in support of the children in our community.

Wearing blue is a simple way to show your commitment to keeping children safe and supporting those who work tirelessly to advocate for them.

Throughout Child Abuse Awareness Month, we are reminded that every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment. It takes a community law enforcement, advocates, educators, and citizens to make that a reality.

Join us this Friday by wearing blue and helping raise awareness. Together, we can make a difference.

As early voting begins, I would be honored to have your support and your vote for District Attorney. While I am running uncontested, I do not take this responsibility lightly. The role of District Attorney carries tremendous weight, to seek justice, protect victims, and ensure fairness for every person who enters our legal system. Even in uncontested races, your vote matters. Participation strengthens our system and reflects the values we stand for in our community.

I believe public service is a calling. Micah 6:8 reminds us: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” That verse guides me daily.

Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, and your continued trust. It will be my honor to serve as your District Attorney.
