Students in Mr. Johnson’s Pre-AP English 9 class are learning how novelists use sensory details and vivid imagery to create a fictional world. After studying a range of novel openings including George Orwell’s 1984, William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, and Sharon Draper’s Out of My Mind, students were challenged to write the opening of their own fictional novel. In addition, students created a unique cover design that included the title of their novel.
To give students the experience of writing for an audience outside of the classroom, our school librarian, Mrs. Van Arkel, served as a judge to select the best novel openings. She selected three Grand Prize winners along and three Honorable Mention award winners. Congratulations to all on a great job and hopefully they’ll continue drafting what just might be a book that sits on the shelves of the Miller Library someday in the future! 📚 🏆
