It’s National Banana Lover’s day, and keeper Josh brought out our ball python Banana to celebrate. Banana is one of our ambassador animals for our NEW Ambassador Animal Outreach Program! Our new ambassador animals won’t be seen on exhibit (and some do not come from North America), but they will be seen during animal encounters, at school programs, libraries, and at other programming throughout the area in months to come. We look forward to getting out into the community with these animals to help people learn more about animal adaptations, defense mechanisms, predator-prey relationships and more! How do you tell the bears apart? đŸ»đŸ»

That’s a great question, and we get it often!
Though Boda typically weighs about 100 pounds more than Munsey, it’s difficult to tell these brothers apart.
One great way to tell is by their behaviors.
Here you can see Munsey displaying a very common behavior for him.
He loves to grab an object, like a stick or a rock, move it around in his paws, sometimes even balancing it on his snout, and then toss it in the air. Often times doing it repeatedly, keeping himself quite entertained!
Boda, on the other hand (or should we say paw?) entertains himself with a very different behavior.
He likes to play a little game with the guests, many of you may have been the unknowing participants over the years, where he will see a guest watching him and bluff charge them. This typically happens at the large viewing window and we think he does it as a game, and when a guest shows a reaction like a scream or a jump, Boda walks away feeling quite pleased with himself. He loves winning and is not the best sport. 😊

Look at those beautiful antlers! 😍

Both Lincoln and Peanut are shedding the velvet on their antlers.
A rise in testosterone in August signals that the annual antler-growing phase is complete. The changing hormone levels constrict and close off the tiny blood vessels and oxygen supply inside the velvet. Deprived of blood and nutrients, the velvet skin dries out, dies, and begins to crack and peel away from the hardened bone underneath. How cool!

Soon elk rutting season will begin and you’ll hear their beautiful bugling!
