Starting Today, June 14–20, 2026, fire departments across the nation are encouraged to participate in Firefighter Safety Stand Down, an annual initiative dedicated to improving firefighter health, safety, and survival. During this week, departments are asked to pause all non-emergency activities and focus on education, training, and conversations that help reduce preventable injuries and line-of-duty deaths.

The 2026 theme, "Firefighter FITNESS: Fit to Serve, Fit for Life," emphasizes that physical fitness is not just about performance—it's about longevity, resilience, and ensuring firefighters are healthy enough to serve their communities and return safely to their families. The week's focus highlights the importance of building lifelong habits related to fitness, nutrition, proper technique, evaluation, sleep, and sustainable wellness strategies.

Every firefighter and every fire department should participate because the demands of the fire service continue to grow, and maintaining physical and mental readiness is essential to reducing injuries, illnesses, and preventable tragedies. Safety Stand Down provides an opportunity to strengthen a department's culture of safety, reinforce best practices, support one another, and recommit to the profession's highest priority: protecting those who protect others.

As firefighters, we willingly answer the call to serve our communities. Firefighter Safety Stand Down reminds us that taking care of ourselves and each other is equally important. By investing in health, fitness, and safety today, we help ensure that every firefighter has the opportunity to enjoy a long, healthy career—and a fulfilling life beyond the firehouse.
"Fit to Serve. Fit for Life. Because the most important rescue of all may be protecting the firefighter standing beside you."

Stay safe, train with purpose, and remember: Everyone Goes Home.
