You don't know how important EMS service is until you desperately need it. It's crazy to us that EMS is not considered to be an essential service.

🚨 Idaho's EMS system has no safety net — and most people don't realize it.

Unlike police and fire, EMS has never been designated an "essential service" at the federal or state level. That means no guaranteed funding floor, no mandated obligation to ensure every Idaho community has equitable, consistent access to emergency medical care.

That's not because EMS matters less — it's because its importance has never been structurally recognized.

Here's the thing: the data to fix this already exists. Call volume alone doesn't tell the story of what's happening on Idaho's roads and in rural communities. Patient acuity, response times, transport rates, and outcomes paint a much clearer picture — and that data can challenge assumptions we hear all the time: that rising call volume means people are "abusing" 911, or that a delayed response means someone dropped the ball.

Sometimes it just means there aren't enough resources to go around.

Idaho deserves an EMS system built on real data, not assumptions. 💪

We join the fire and emergency medical services community in mourning the passing of Randy Mantooth, best known for his portrayal of Firefighter-Paramedic Johnny Gage on the groundbreaking television series Emergency!

Beginning in 1972, Johnny Gage and Roy DeSoto introduced millions of Americans to a new model of emergency care: highly trained paramedics responding from the fire station and bringing advanced medical treatment directly to the patient. The series helped the public understand and support the emerging paramedic profession, while inspiring generations of firefighters, EMTs and paramedics to serve their communities.

That history has a special connection to El Dorado County. In July 1977, some of the first ambulance service agreements on the West Slope were established with the Po***ck Pines Fire Protection District and the Diamond Springs-El Dorado Fire Protection District. The service established in Po***ck Pines—and later carried forward through the former Po***ck Pines-Camino Fire Protection District—helped build the foundation for the fire-based paramedic and ambulance system serving our communities today.

While Randy Mantooth portrayed a paramedic on television, his commitment to EMS continued long after the series ended. He became a respected advocate for firefighters, paramedics and emergency medical services professionals across the country.

His legacy lives on each time a firefighter-paramedic answers the call, brings advanced care to someone in need and carries forward the mission that Emergency! helped introduce to the nation.

Rest in peace, Randy Mantooth. Thank you for helping tell the story of paramedicine—and for inspiring generations to become part of it. We'll take it from here. Squad 51 clear. KMG-365

Tonight members of Marsing Ambulance, Marsing Fire, Owyhee County Sheriffs, and Life Flight Network came together to rescue a victim of a rollover. Tremendous teamwork! Our thanks to all involved.

Marsing Search and Rescue safely brought a patient down from Jump Creek Upper falls trail. Using the new stokes wheel basket and numerous volunteers made the extreme terrain conditions workable. Huge shout out to two individuals who were riding horses/mules in the area, and a hiker assisted in bringing the patient down safely. The patient was ground transported by Marsing Ambulance to a local hospital for continued care

In partnership with the Marsing Fire Department and made possible via a grant from the State of Idaho EMS Bureau, Marsing Ambulance now has a new vehicle you will see on the road and responding to calls. This vehicle carries the special rescue equipment that members of both departments have worked hard to train on including rope and water rescue gear.

Officials emphasize vigilance during the "100 Deadliest Days" on Idaho roads, with motorcycle safety in focus as crashes and fatalities rise in the summer months.
