The town of Martha is located in Southwest Oklahoma and in 1990 local citizens organized the Martha Volunteer Fire Department. The department serves the Martha and Jackson County communities. Its jurisdiction encompasses approximately 75 square miles. The Department is equipped with two pumpers, two

brush trucks, and one tanker. The department was originally housed in the Martha School District bus barn and was permitted to use only one bay located on the south side of the barn. When the school closed in the early 1990's the department was given the opportunity to lease the remaining portion of the building from the town. Over the years the members had made alterations to the interior making it more favorable to department needs. The four bays on the south side of the station were used to park the first response units. Two additional vehicles were parked in the two north bays. In the center were the office and training areas. The building has electricity and heating, but no air conditioning. At least it kept the vehicles out of the elements and provided the volunteers a place to meet and train. In 2009 a grant was received to build a new building with 4 bays, 8 stalls, and 1 internal structure housing the air conditioned office, indoor plumbing, and a storage/utility room with room to expand. The Fighting 87th Tigers in our patch represents the first two numbers of our county assigned call numbers. (EX: Chief = 871, Assistant Chief = 874, Captain = 872, LT = 873). The Tiger originated from the Martha School mascot and was adopted by the department after the school closed in the early 1990's. Southwestern Oklahoma is prone to severe weather. Most of the department members are trained as Weather Spotters. They are also tasked with activating the town siren to warn citizens of approaching severe storms and tornado's. The department is not only responsible to the town of Martha and the surrounding farm lands, but has provided and received mutual aid from communities in and around Jackson County. The department has assisted Altus, Blair, Elmer, Friendship, Olustee, Duke and other nearby communities.
