In a week marked by multiple wind driven fires in western South Dakota, the Martin Volunteer Fire Department responded to several significant emergencies from Wednesday through Sunday.
On Wednesday, the department tackled two major fires fueled by windy conditions. Early that morning, around 2:45 a.m., crews were dispatched to a structure fire in Pine Ridge. An occupied single wide trailer house started on fire and over the course of the response from Martin to Pine Ridge strong winds had spread flames to a second trailer house, an RV and a car. Firefighters arrived just in time to extinguish a third trailer home that had ignited and prevented a grass fire and an adjacent duplex from catching fire. With assistance from the Oglala Sioux Tribe Emergency Management, they contained the blaze by around 6:30 a.m.
Later that windy Wednesday afternoon, around 2:00 p.m., the department responded to another fire west of Batesland, where a garage fire had spread into a neighboring house along with minor damage to several small outbuildings. They worked with the Batesland and Alpha 1 Fire Departments to extinguish the flames by around 5:00 p.m.
On Sunday morning at 7:45 a.m., the department, with help from the Kyle Volunteer Fire Department, responded to a garage fire near Kyle. They quickly contained the fire, which involved two vehicles inside the garage and caused minor heat and smoke damage to an adjacent house.
As the Martin Volunteer Fire Department looks back on this busy week, they urge the community to stay vigilant about fire safety, especially during high winds and the dry and unseasonably warm weather. They remind residents to check their chimneys, use electric heaters cautiously, and monitor all cords used for Christmas lights to help prevent future fires.
