Congratulations – You've used your Medi-Cal dental benefit and set up a check-up for your child. But what happens at the visit?

At your child's check-up, the dentist may want to take x-rays of their teeth. X-rays help the dentist find any problems, like early signs of cavities. Then, a dentist or a hygienist will clean your child's teeth. They'll polish and floss their teeth to make them sparkle. If your child has back teeth, called molars, the dentist will check if they need sealants. Sealants are special coatings that go on those farthest back teeth to keep them safe and healthy.

Are you ready to take an extra step to protect your children and young adults’ teeth? Just ask their dentist about sealants during your next visit.

Dentists usually suggest sealants for children and youths, especially between 6 and 14 years old. That’s when their back teeth grow in, and they have groves and pits that can be hard to clean. These places are more likely to get cavities.

With Medi-Cal, sealants are covered for members under the age of 21. Remember, taking care of your children and young adults’ teeth now can help them have healthy teeth for a lifetime.

About Us

Often called the "best kept secret of Contra Costa County", Contra Costa Health Plan (CCHP) has been serving the health needs for people in the County for 40 years. CCHP was the first federally qualified, state licensed, county sponsored HMO in the United States. In 1973, we became the first county sponsored health plan in California to offer Medi-cal Managed Care coverage and in 1976, we became the first county run HMO to serve Medicare beneficiaries. In the 1980's, we expanded our programs to reach out to county employees, businesses, individuals and families. In 2014 as part of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, CCHP enrolled over 35,000 newly eligible individuals into Medi-Cal Managed Care and in 2015 over 25,000 more individuals enrolled into CCHP Medi-Cal Managed Care.
