View Sanitary District provides wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal services for a portion of the City of Martinez and adjacent unincorporated lands. View Sanitary District provides high value, quality wastewater collection, treatment, reclamation and related service programs. Founded in 1923, the district serves 22,000 residents in Martinez, California, with 278 commercial connection a
nd 7,958 residential connections. The district operates and maintains approximately 73 miles of sewer and 4 pumping stations. Approximately 1.25 million gallons per day of wastewater is received per day and is put through rigorous standards of treatment. MVSD was the first sewer treatment plant in Northern California to use ultraviolet (UV) disinfection. MVSD directs treated effluent into a series of marshes, the 21-acre constructed Moorhen Marsh and the 130-acre natural McNabney Marsh. Through these marshes, MVSD has created an eco-friendly environment for birds, plants, mammals and aquatic invertebrates. The marshes also provide an area for students, birdwatchers, biologists and the general public to observe and learn about these species. The Wetlands Education Program has educated thousands of students on pollution prevention and wetlands conservation since 1996.
