The City of Martinsburg welcomes City of Martinsburg Fire Department newest firefighters.

The Martinsburg Fire Department started a 9-week Fire Academy today consisting of 14 new firefighters who are beginning their journey toward a career in public service. This class includes six additional firefighters added to the department's staffing levels, in addition to recruits who are filling positions created by retirements.

During the academy, recruits will receive extensive classroom instruction, hands-on training, and practical experience in fire suppression, emergency response, rescue operations, hazardous materials awareness, physical fitness and firefighter safety. The academy is designed to provide the foundation necessary to serve and protect the residents, businesses and visitors of Martinsburg.

We appreciate the dedication and commitment these individuals have demonstrated by choosing a career of service to others. Upon successful completion of the academy, they will join the ranks of the Martinsburg Fire Department and help carry forward the department's long tradition of professionalism, courage and service to the community.

Please join us in welcoming these future firefighters and wishing them success as they complete their training and prepare to serve the City of Martinsburg.

In a City Council meeting last month, FF/Paramedic Jacob Yates was commended for his retirement following 20 years of dedicated service. The City Council meeting this evening honored Battalion Chief Doug Smith's 21 years of dedication as he retires, promoted Michael Bowers from Lieutenant to Battalion Chief, and recognized the new hires, FF/EMT Kyle Roberts and FF/EMT Corey Bowers. Congratulations gentlemen!
