How strong is the sense of connection inside your organization?

Session two of our Nonprofit Sustainability Series features keynote speaker Anthony Sartori, a social entrepreneur on a mission to build a connected society.

While working at a grocery store during the pandemic, Anthony started a 15-minute team meeting that grew into a year-long pilot. It turned a burned-out, siloed workplace into a real community, and it led him to found the nonprofit Evolving Minds. Today he speaks nationally through Active Minds and Weave: The Social Fabric Project of the Aspen Institute. He has also spent more than a decade photographing what he calls "Our Epidemic of Loneliness."

Anthony will share how nonprofit leaders can build cultures of care that keep teams, volunteers and communities connected for the long haul. A panel discussion follows.

What if nonprofit sustainability started with the community you already serve, not only with the next grant?

Our Nonprofit Sustainability Series continues tomorrow, September 23, with keynote speaker Danielle Battle, cofounder of RICH (Restoring Inner City Hope, Inc.) and the RICH Juice Bar.

In "Proximity to Possibility: Building Community, Enterprise, and Impact," Danielle will share how leading with proximity, humility, and trust builds stronger community relationships. She'll also show how social enterprise can turn a community's needs and assets into revenue, jobs, youth development, and impact that lasts.

With hundreds of volunteers across 40+ job sites for our United Way Day of Caring, we have a lot of stories to tell. This is Ruby's. 💛

Ruby is 15. On Tuesday she was out with her fellow FFA members laying mulch and prepping apple butter jars for the festival, the kind of work that isn't glamorous and doesn't get a thank-you most days.

She gets why we do this: to show up for the places that don't always get help.

That's a wrap on the 32nd Annual Day of Caring. 💙

Yesterday, the Eastern Panhandle showed up. Nearly 50 projects at more than 40 nonprofits, schools, parks and community sites across Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties, all in one day.

Volunteers painted 800 feet of fence at Sam Michaels Park. They washed feed buckets, cleaned stalls and pulled weeds at Horses with Hearts. They zip-tied 100 feet of windscreen along the fence at the Morgan County Observatory. They handed out 150 bags of fresh, locally grown food with Community Markets. They delivered hygiene bags to seniors with Faith Feeding Freedom, made apple butter with the elders in Paw Paw, replanted the butterfly garden at Green Hill Cemetery, and rebuilt a garden with a crew of very determined kids in gloves three sizes too big.

This is what we mean when we say United Way is powered by people. Not a program, not a building, just neighbors who decided a nonprofit's to-do list was their to-do list for the day.

To every company that sent a team, every school leadership class and K-Kids club, every family that brought the kids, every retiree who showed up with their own gloves: thank you. Today we pause to remember the victims of September 11, 2001, and to honor the first responders, survivors, and families who still carry that day with them.

Across the Eastern Panhandle, September 11, 2001 was also a Day of Caring. While the nation grappled with unimaginable loss, many of our neighbors spent that morning showing up for one another, a quiet reminder that even in our darkest moments, community carries us through.

This year, Day of Caring returns on September 15. We will have hundreds of volunteers joining us in that same spirit: showing up for each other, just as this community did 25 years ago. We will remember a morning that changed the world as we knew it, and we will honor the memories, legacies and sacrifices made on that September morning and in the days, weeks, months and years since.

A huge thank you to the 15+ locations across the Eastern Panhandle hosting collection bins for this year's MEGA Food Drive! Your partnership makes it easy for our community to give back. 👏

From September 15 – October 15, help us stock local food banks and backpack programs serving families across Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties. Check the graphic below to find the drop-off location nearest you.

Start gathering shelf-stable foods, snacks, paper towels, and other accepted items now. Refer to the flyer we posted earlier for the full list of acceptable items.

Board Member Spotlight: Eric Stenger ⭐️

Eric's connection to United Way goes way back, literally to his days in Boy Scouts, where he first heard United Way's name as a major partner. Years later, watching his mom serve on the United Way board showed him firsthand how funds raised locally turn into real support for organizations like the Scouts.

As an adult, Eric came full circle: he was part of two organizations that received United Way support, volunteered for two Days of Caring, and then joined the board without a second thought.

"I love our community and the United Way supports our community in ways no other organization does, which makes me a proud supporter and board member."

Thank you, Eric, for your dedication to the Eastern Panhandle!
