The Martinsville Police Department recently received a donation of care kits from the Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition, which officers are distributing to community members in need.

Message from Virgina Harm Reduction Coalition:

“Each kit has basic hygiene supplies (shampoo, soap, toothbrush), wound care supplies, food, water, a one-page community resource flyer, and information about our agency. The goal is simply to give officers something tangible to offer someone who may be experiencing homelessness or another situation where they need basic supplies or a connection to resources. We know officers often encounter people who may never make it to our office, so we wanted to put resources in the hands of people who are already interacting with our community. It’s not about sharing participant information or enforcement, just another way to connect people to resources and reduce barriers to care. We really appreciate the opportunity to collaborate around education, resource connection, and keeping people safe.”

All proceeds will be donated to local groups who advocate on behalf of those affected by the disease. The Sheriff was a great man who led with kindness and compassion. He cared with all his heart for his employees, the City of Martinsville and the people he served. He was a friend and mentor to many. He will be missed.

The Martinsville Police Department is pleased to announce the promotion of Willie Warnick to the rank of Lieutenant and Tucker Brown to the rank of Sergeant.

Lieutenant Warnick has served with the Martinsville Police Department since 2016. During his career, he has served in patrol, criminal investigations, and most recently as Sergeant of our Community Resource Unit.

Sergeant Brown has served with the department since 2018. He has worked in patrol and most recently served as a detective in our Special Investigations Unit. Sergeant Brown also serves as the department’s ATF Task Force Officer.

We are proud of the dedication and service both of these officers have demonstrated throughout their careers. Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Warnick and Sergeant Brown on these well-deserved promotions!

The Martinsville Police Department, in partnership with Jarrett Marketing LLC, is proud to congratulate Detective Trish Elgin on being named Officer of the Quarter!

This honor is voted on by senior members of the department and recognizes an officer who consistently demonstrates exceptional dedication, professionalism, and service to both the department and the Martinsville community.

Detective Elgin joined the department in November 2019 and currently serves in the Criminal Investigations Division. Beyond her investigative work, she also plays a critical role as one of the department’s Hostage Negotiators—a position requiring remarkable skill, patience, and compassion.

MEDIA RELEASE

Martinsville Police Investigate Shooting

Martinsville, VA – On Saturday, August 1, 2026, officers with the Martinsville Police Department responded to the 900 block of Starling Avenue after hearing multiple shots being fired in the area.

Upon arrival, officers located multiple pieces of evidence related to the shots fired in the rear parking lot of a business in the 900 block of Starling Ave. Officers determined that there were no injuries related to the incident.

Through the course of the investigation, officers identified Kevin Darel Preston, 38, of Martinsville, as the suspect. Preston was subsequently arrested on August 21, 2026.

Preston has been charged with two counts of attempted manslaughter, shooting at an occupied vehicle, reckless handling of a fi***rm, and shooting in a public place. He is currently being held at the Martinsville City Jail without bond.

The Martinsville Police Department would also like to clarify that this incident was determined to be unrelated to the homicide that occurred on August 1, 2026, on Fayette Street in the City of Martinsville. The two incidents are not associated.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Adam Parnell of the Martinsville Police Department at 276-403-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 276-63CRIME (276-632-7463). Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous tips, and tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Friendly reminder: School starts back on Tuesday, August 11th!

Please remember to drive safely, especially in school zones. When the lights are flashing, please slow down to the posted school zone speed. Photo speed enforcement will be active in school zones.

Also, please remember: never pass a stopped school bus when its lights are flashing and the stop arm is out. Children may be crossing, and a few extra seconds of waiting keeps everyone safe.
