Friday nights in Martinsville are about more than football. 🏈

They’re about the band warming up. Cheerleaders hyping up the crowd from the sidelines. Students and community members filling the stands. Families catching up with old friends. Alumni coming home. An entire community gathering under the lights.

Since 1971, the football field at Martinsville High School has been the backdrop for generations of those memories.

Now, MHS has entered T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights competition for the chance to bring new life to this longtime Martinsville gathering place, and we need our whole community behind us! 🐾

It was a thrilling night in the Dawg House, ending with TWO Bulldog victories! 🏐🐾

Our JV and varsity volleyball squads put on impressive displays of athleticism, grit, and teamwork as they battled their way to back-to-back wins over GW!

Our JV squad, made up ENTIRELY of 8th graders, came out on top after two nail-biting sets. On the varsity side, GW mounted an impressive comeback in the third set, tying the score multiple times, but our Bulldogs dug deep and finished strong for the win. 💪

But as exciting as those victories were, something else impressed us even more.

No matter the score, these Bulldogs never stopped smiling, encouraging one another, and celebrating each other. The bonds and trust these teams have built were on full display, along with the joy they share in getting to compete together.

Great games, Bulldogs! Let’s carry that spirit, teamwork, and momentum all season long! ❤️🏐

The Henry County/Martinsville College Fair is Tuesday, September 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Bassett High School! Meet with college representatives, discover some of the many opportunities that await you, and start planning your next steps after graduation!

Register in advance at https://app.strivescan.com/registration to get your barcode. At the fair, just show your barcode to college reps to share your information!

Meet Kathy Harned, a proud Martinsville graduate who's back and making a difference right here at MCPS!

A member of the Mavahi Class of 1981, Kathy is right back in the classroom, teaching Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment English and Creative Writing!

A sense of belonging and love of home brought Kathy back to Martinsville. "I'm a lifelong Bulldog," she said, "and I wanted to come back home! I love working in my community and knowing my students' parents."

🐾 Favorite MCPS memory: "Pretty much everything. I loved school and was extremely social. Oh, and all the senior perks! Leaving at 1:00 if you ad all your credits was great!"

🍎 Most influential teacher: Mrs. Barbara Epperly

🙌 Why MCPS? "For me, it's my community. I like small class sizes and our diverse population. Every teacher has to find their fit, and I found mine here. "

⚛️🍪 Science is always a little more fun when you can eat the lesson afterward!

At MMS, our 8th graders got hands-on with atoms using sugar cookies, icing, and M&M’s to build their own models of lithium atoms.

With an atomic number of 3, lithium has 3 protons and 3 electrons. Students had to use their supplies to correctly model the parts of the atom before enjoying the tastiest part of the assignment: eating their work!

Hands-on activities like this may seem simple, but they turn concepts students see in a textbook into something they can build, explore, and better understand.

And, really, who doesn’t learn a little better when cookies are involved? 🍪🔬

📈 Five years of growth. Five years of hard work. And plenty to be proud of.

New SOL data from the Virginia Department of Education shows that MCPS students have made substantial academic gains since the 2020-2021 school year, with divisionwide pass rates increasing by:

📚 11 percentage points in reading
➗ 35 percentage points in math
🔬 24 percentage points in science

Our growth in reading and math has outpaced the statewide recovery over the same five-year period, with strong gains also seen across several student groups.

These numbers represent so much more than test scores. They reflect years of intentional instruction, targeted academic support, perseverance from our students, dedication from our teachers and staff, and partnership from our families.

“These results give us a lot to celebrate,” said Dr. Talley, “and they give us a lot of reasons to be excited about what’s coming next. I always say our students are capable of great things, and we will continue to work together to give them the support and opportunities they need to continue to succeed,” Superintendent Dr. Zebedee Talley Jr. said.

There is still work ahead, but we are proud to see that work paying off and excited to keep building on this progress together. ❤️🐾
