On Monday morning, August 31, 2026, Michael Law was appointed as Sheriff of the City of Martinsville by the judges of the 21st Judicial Circuit.

As the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office and community are still mourning the sudden loss of Sheriff Steve Draper, state law requires that a locality appoint a sheriff to serve until a Special Election is held. With 19 years of experience with the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office, Law has the qualifications needed to exercise the power and authority of the City’s Sheriff.

“It is a bittersweet moment for me as I’ve always pictured this moment to take place with Sheriff Draper by my side,” said Sheriff Law. “However, I look forward to building on the strong foundation he laid ahead of us, serving with integrity, professionalism, and dedication.”

A Special Election will be held on November 2, 2027, to elect the position of Sheriff to serve the remainder of this current term.
