Here are a few more photos from when the Marysville Fire Department of California joined us for story time last month. Kids had a blast as they were able to check out a fire engine, see the gear firefighters wear, learn about the different tools firefighters use, and have an opportunity to use a fire hose. Afterwards we listened to the story "Fire Pups to the Rescue" and made our own paper fire engine. Our next Community Helper Story time will be on August 19th with Janet Bender from County Counsel. You don't want to miss it!

In July we held a NASA Space party with materials provided by Science@MyLibrary, NASA, HMI Tangled Bank Studios, and STARnet; all part of our Science Across America America 250 Celebrations. At our NASA party kids started off by making straw rockets, rocket ships, an astronaut, or designing their own universes. After all the space candidates arrived, they had to test their lung strength with straw rockets; assist Mission Control in landing rocket shuttles on the landing pad (not in the water), test their endurance and strength with a rocket relay, and learn about making decisions in space with our disappearing planets game. After that we went on to doing science experiments as we learned about the effects of UV radiation and were able to examine rocks and meteorites. Our space hopefuls then had to complete a solar system scavenger hunt. Once all tasks were accomplished, we had an astronaut cadet ceremony by the American flag, and each cadet was given a favor bag with items provided by NASA and Science Across America.

Story Time is a great place for children and caregivers to have fun, listen to cute stories, and create adorable crafts. Here are some photos of a past story time where we read the book "Twinkle, Twinkle Nighttime Sky", by Elizabeth Everett, as part of our theme "N is for Night". Afterwards we made a nighttime sky with the letter N. This week we have story time on Monday (8/17) at the Government Center, with a special story time on Wednesday (8/19) with County Counsel. On Friday (8/21) we have a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Scavenger Hunt, with characters from the comic, TV show, and movies hidden throughout the Government Center.

Last month we had Red Robin return for story time. Children listened to the stories "Let's Make Burgers" and "May's Too Big Pizza". Afterwards we made little cheeseburgers. The next time we will have a special guest in story time will be August 19th, with Janet Bender from County Counsel. Hope to see you there!

Yesterday (8/12) we had a special farming themed story time with Todd Quist, Assistant Agricultural Commissioner. Mr. Todd read “10 Little Tractors” and “Farmers”; talked what types of farms we have in Yuba County; and shared about tractors, bees, and farm animals. Afterwards he showed us some insects and bug specimens they have, allowing children to get a up close view on creepy crawlies. Before story time ended children made a cute little tractor!

To honor America 250, the California State Library has donated these books to help celebrate 250 years of independence. Each book was selected by California State Librarians and showcase important moments or figures in the United States of America's 250 years. All books that are part of this collection will have an "America 250" on the cover.

We had so much fun with Lee's llamas in June, we had to bring them back in July! Families could meet and pet mama llama Leche and her baby Honey. Kids could also color, make a mini llama, and a llama headband; along with playing our Llama Llama Dress Up Game.

Last month we had the Fire Department join us for story time. Kids had a blast as they were able to check out a fire engine, see the gear firefighters wear, learn about the different tools firefighters use, and have an opportunity to use a fire hose. Afterwards we listened to the story "Fire Pups to the Rescue" and made our own paper fire engine. Our next Community Helper Story time will be on August 12th and all about farming as we are joined by Todd Quist, the assistant agricultural commissioner.
