Please join me and the Employee of the Month Selection Committee in congratulating the following staff members on being named MTC Employees of the Month for June 2026.

Custody – Jordan Dean, Correctional Officer I

COI Jordan Dean was nominated by COII Johnathan Kothe, who wrote, “COI Dean is instrumental in ensuring that Administrative Segregation stays running as efficiently as it does on third shift. COI Dean consistently accomplishes tasks even with short notice or when the shift that day is packed with required tasks such as Ad-seg rec, showers, Ad-seg releases, phone calls, last second placements, or all of the above occurring in one shift. Not only does he accomplish everything asked of him, but he also does so with a positive attitude, level head, and while working well in a team based environment. COI Dean has also been observed taking on the role as a teacher and mentor when guiding junior or inexperienced staff through the specific functions of his unit. As his direct supervisor, I am acutely aware that my job would be significantly more strenuous if I did not have him in my unit.”

Non-custody – Bryce Buholt, FUM

FUM Bryce Buholt was nominated by Case Manager II Kathleen Baudino and Storekeeper I Treva Smyser, who wrote, “FUM Buholt was already a very busy person, with overseeing housing unit 1 and 3, Puppies for Parole, RJ items, as well as the garden. He has been working very hard during the vacancy of two FUM positions and 2 case manager absences. He is assisting all the CCM’s as he is the only FUM at MTC at the current time. He always makes time if you have a concern about anything. He has done it all while maintaining his professionalism and calm demeanor. He continues to be an excellent role model for staff as well as offenders. Bryce exemplifies dedication to MTC and truly cares about the people here. He deserves to be rewarded for all his hard work.”

The professionalism shown by these staff members supports MTC’s commitment to The Corrections Way and helps build trust, rapport, respect, listening, appreciating, and valuing across our entire team. I commend their efforts and the leadership they have shown by their personal examples. When you see them, be sure to take a moment to congratulate them on a job well done.

On Friday May 29th, Maryville Treatment Center held a Blood Drive for all employees to participate in!

Did you know every two seconds someone needs blood? Donating blood is a great way to give back to others and it take no time at all; we encourage everyone to go donate!

A very big shoutout to Mrs. Jacqueline West for organizing and helping with the blood drive! Thank you!

Puppies for Parole

This program is inside many institutions, one of those being Maryville Treatment Center. Our residents spend 8 weeks helping these pups find their confidence, learn new skills and most importantly, give them a temporary home until they can find their forever place.

Maryville Treatment Center works with the New Nodaway Humane Society to help dogs who have been in the Humane Society for an extended period of time. Once 4 dogs have been picked our handlers take lots of time and consideration on how they train and handle the dogs, so they have the best experience.

We currently have four dogs, Rippley, Stewart, Tiny and Whisper. The dogs will be leaving soon as all of them have graduated from the program. We have two dogs who have been adopted to their forever homes. Whisper and Stewart are still patiently waiting for the perfect person to come. If you are interested in adoption, please contact Nodaway Humane Society.

We spoke with all of our dog handlers and they all shared some very special information with us. We wanted to share some of their thoughts with you.

Dog Handlers William stated, "This is a way for me to give back to my community, it also gives the dogs a chance to be successful in their new homes."

Dog Handler Treay stated, "I joined the program because in a way we relate to each other, they are in a sense locked up like us. I wanted to be able to give them hope."

Dog Handler Michael stated, "I have experienced a lot in life, when I came here something in me clicked and I really wanted it to be different. I wanted to change so I joined this program as a way to help not only myself but to be able to help the dogs."

Dog Handler Shawn stated, "My favorite memory in the program is when I got my dog Stewart, I laid my blanket down and he immediately jumped up and started to cuddle with me."

Dog Handler Justin stated, "My favorite memory is when Rippley started smiling at me, once she started doing it, she has never stopped."

Dog Handler Sloan stated, "I love to see the progression of the dogs from their first day here with all of the new things they have learned."

Dog Handler Darrell stated, "I started this program in 2022-2023 and when I started, I wanted to prove to myself that I could help someone/something else and do good. This program has taught me that."
