Happy ! We're finishing off August with another article of Blount County community news, first published in the August 30, 1945 edition of the Maryville Enterprise. It was republished in the paper 10 years later in the Bygones column, which was made up of articles from past editions of the local paper. Some of these articles have been collected in the Bygones book, which can be found in the local history collection at the Blount County Public Library.

Like so many of you, we are deeply saddened by Dolly Parton’s passing. The kindness she showed throughout her life has left a lasting impact on countless lives and brought joy to so many. We are especially grateful for how much she has given to our region and for all the work she has done for children’s literacy. Her Imagination Library has put books in the hands of countless children in Blount County and around the world, and helped foster a love of reading for so many.

Thank you, Dolly. 🦋

Hot Summer Nights is winding down! For our last week, Cole Ritter & The Night Owls will be joining us! They are a Nashville-based Americana band that blends upright bass, pedal steel guitar, and electric guitar with a modern indie-pop sensibility.

We hope to see you next Thursday night!

Happy ! In 1954, Smoky Mountain Highway 73 opened for travel between Kinzel Springs in Townsend and the Smoky Mountain National Park. While the road had been open unofficially for some time as a dirt road, once the road was upgraded and resurfaced, it was officially open to the public. A request was also submitted to give the road a federal designation to attract tourists and encourage people to drive through the Smoky Mountain National Park.
