Today is Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor the sacrifices made by our service men and women who fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

If you have never visited the War Memorial in front of the Courthouse, I encourage you to do so. Inscribed on walls are the names of every Blount Countian who died in service to their country, from the War of 1812 to the War on Terrorism. These men and women were our ancestors, friends, and neighbors.

All gave some, but some gave all.

All Blount County Government Offices will be closed today, Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day. Normal scheduled hours will resume for all Blount County Government Offices on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 8:00am.

This afternoon, we had the honor of celebrating WWII Navy Veteran Norval Ziegler during a very special pinning ceremony.

In just a few days, Norval will turn 101 years old!

Norval completed Navy boot camp in San Diego and went on to serve as a Sonar Technician aboard the USS O’Reilly (DE-330), an Edsall-class destroyer es**rt ship, during World War II. After his military service, he graduated from the University of Arkansas and enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

It was a privilege to present Norval with a beautiful handcrafted walking stick and plaque specially made by Steve Newman.

Thank you, Norval, for your service to our country during WWII and for your dedication throughout your life. We are incredibly proud of you and wish you a very happy 101st birthday!
