HOMECOMING SAFETY REMINDER

As a reminder, the Maryville Police Department will not be assisting pedestrians crossing Illinois Route 159 at Perry Street or assisting motorcycles leaving Perry Street onto Route 159 during this year’s Homecoming.

🚓🚒🎡 Maryville Fire Department Homecoming is Almost Here!

The Maryville Police Department is excited to help support another great Maryville Fire Department Homecoming! We hope everyone comes out to participate. As always, our priority is making sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable event.

After evaluating safety concerns over the past several years, the Maryville Police Department will no longer be assisting pedestrians crossing Illinois Route 159 at Perry Street or assisting motorcycles leaving Perry Street onto Route 159 during Homecoming.

Unfortunately, we have experienced an increasing number of close calls involving inattentive motorists where officers and pedestrians were nearly struck while attempting to stop traffic. Crossing a five-lane roadway at an uncontrolled location in the dark presents a significant safety risk, especially during one of the busiest weekends of the year.

For your safety, please use the marked crosswalk at Main Street and Route 159. It is located just two blocks south of the Homecoming grounds and is the safest place to cross the highway.

Motorcyclists exiting Perry Street should also be prepared to enter traffic without police traffic control and should use extra caution.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we continue to evaluate our operations with the safety of our community and our officers as our highest priority.

Let’s work together to make this year’s Maryville Fire Department Homecoming a memorable event for everyone!

We look forward to seeing you at Homecoming! Stay safe and enjoy the festivities!
