City of Mason City offices will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. City transit buses will not be operating on that day. Regular City transit routes will resume on Tuesday, September 8.

Sanitation will not be collected on Monday, September 7. The make-up day for garbage and recyclable service for those that normally have pick-up on Monday will be Wednesday, September 9.

Beginning Tuesday, September 8, College Drive near NIACC will be closed to through traffic between 12th Street and Highway 122 for approximately 8 days while utility improvements are completed.
Access to the dorm parking lot is from 12th Street. Access to the main parking lot is from Highway 122.

🌎✈️ What a ride, Mason City!

The 2026 World Aerobatic Championship has officially come to a close — and what an incredible honor it was to welcome some of the world’s best aerobatic pilots right here to Mason City! 🏆

For more than a week, the eyes of the aerobatic world were on North Iowa, and our community showed up in a BIG way. 👏

Congratulations to the champions, competitors and teams — and a huge THANK YOU to the organizers, volunteers, airport staff and everyone who helped make this world-class event possible.

Mason City on the world stage. Now THAT’S unheard of. ✈️🌎

🏆 THAT’S A WRAP ON THE 2026 WORLD AEROBATIC CHAMPIONSHIP! 🇺🇸✈️🇫🇷

With last night’s closing ceremony at the legendary Surf Ballroom & Museum, the 2026 World Aerobatic Championships has officially come to a close.

And what a championship it was!

🥇 Florent Oddon of the French Aerobatics Unlimited Team has done it again!

At the 33rd FAI World Aerobatic Championship in Mason City, Iowa, held August 24–September 2, Oddon secured his third consecutive World Champion title.

Already a two-time champion in 2022 and 2024, Oddon has now made history as the first pilot ever to win three consecutive FAI World Aerobatic Championships. An extraordinary accomplishment in one of aviation’s most demanding disciplines. 🏆🏆🏆

🇫🇷 FRANCE ALSO TAKES THE TEAM TITLE!

The French Unlimited Aerobatic Team claimed first place in the team championship, powered by the outstanding performances of:

✈️ Florent Oddon
✈️ Mikaela Brageot
✈️ Sébastien Souchet

Their combined scores once again placed France at the very top of the world stage.

But while the competition may be over, we know that an event of this magnitude doesn't happen because of the pilots alone.

This championship would not have been possible without the magnificent support of the General Aviation community at Mason City Municipal Airport, the incredible volunteers who gave their time and energy, and the communities of Mason City and Clear Lake who welcomed competitors, teams, spectators, and visitors from around the world.

And a very special thank you to Wayne and Heidi Forbes, who worked tirelessly to organize and bring this world-class event to North Iowa in just over two months. Their dedication and determination were nothing short of remarkable.

From competitors and crews to volunteers, airport staff, spectators, sponsors, and our entire community — THANK YOU for making history with us. 🇺🇸

What an incredible few weeks for North Iowa, for aviation, and for the Mason City Municipal Airport.

🌳 A major milestone for Mason City’s urban forest!

After six years of work, the final ash tree in the City right-of-way has been removed as part of Mason City’s response to the emerald ash borer (EAB).

Since EAB was first confirmed here in 2020, City crews have removed 2,816 ash trees from streets and public rights-of-way — a tremendous undertaking to address hazardous trees and protect the community.

But removal is only part of the story. 🌱 During that same time, the City has planted more than 900 new trees, with additional planting planned each year to rebuild and diversify Mason City’s urban forest for generations to come.

While some ash trees remain in parks and alleys, removal of the final right-of-way ash marks an important milestone — and represents countless hours of planning, planting and hard work by City staff. Kudos to our crews!

There were several special items on last night’s City Council meeting agenda.

Brian Pauly and Dennis Wilson shared an update on the Prairie Playground, the Sculptures on Parade “Best in Show” award was announced: "Round and Round" by Martin Leenhouts, Lake Crystal, Minnesota, and Edith Blanchard provided an update on the MacNider Museum Reaccreditation.

Mayor Lee also presented Proclamations designating Filmmakers’ Week, September 7-13, 2026 and the Mason City National Chamber of Commerce recognition.
