Huge thanks to the RSVP volunteers who help staff the pantry so that it is open and available to our NIACC community!

The NIACC Food Pantry is here to support students facing food insecurity. Located in the Activity Center Room 136, the Pantry offers free, confidential access to groceries, snacks and personal care items for any NIACC student in need. Our goal is to make sure every student has access to the essentials so they can focus on their education and well-being. Students can visit the Pantry 10-2 Monday-Friday or contact the Advising Center for more information. To donate to the Pantry: http://bit.ly/4qveSXH Select other as the Type of Donation and include Food Pantry as the designation.

Our RSVP disaster response volunteers had a great time at Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management Agency this morning! Coordinator Eric Whipple shared information and provided a tour of the facility. Volunteers learned how to sign up for 'Alert Iowa', the importance of NOAA weather radios and also that FEMA shelters automatically unlock when severe weather sirens sound! If you'd like to attend the next training or learn how to get involved with this project, email [email protected]!

We're excited to host a listening session for Volunteer Iowa here at NIACC on July 17! This visit is part of their effort to gain feedback about volunteerism initiatives across the state so they can plan for work in the years ahead. Help highlight all the great work north Iowans are doing--and advocate for rural communities in national service by attending and sharing your thoughts! All are welcome.

Below, RSVP Volunteer, Charlene Gooch shares a story about her recent visit with students she serves at Harding Elementary in Mason City:

"As we were chatting, the topic of where they like to play came up and they mentioned, "GOOCH PARK". I asked them if they knew where or what that name came from. Nope. When I told them that the park was named for my dad, they were so EXCITED! I asked them if there was anything they wanted to change or add to the park.

One suggested, "A big slide! The small slide isn't big enough for 10-11 year-olds." They all agreed. I told them I'd 1, talk to my brother and sister and 2, talk to someone in city government. Oh, my, more excitement!

After they went to recess, their teacher told me she grew up playing in that park, too! She was just as happy to know the history as the kids were."

Thank you for your service and for sharing this fun story Charlene! We hope a BIG slide finds its way to Gooch Park very soon.
