Mason's Seaquist House will be open this Saturday, Oct. 4th with tours running between 10am and 1:30pm. Just show up between those hours as you don't need reservations! It's located about a block and a half north of the courthouse at 405 Broad St. Tours last about an hour and you'll see all three stories plus an amazing basement! Come see it for yourself!

On a quiet hilltop above the town of Mason, Texas , a single sandstone building marks the spot where some of the best known officers in American military history once served.

Fort Mason was established in 1851 as part of a line of frontier forts protecting settlements in the Texas Hill Country. In the years before the Civil War, it was home to the Second U.S. Cavalry, and officers who served there included Robert E. Lee, Albert Sidney Johnston, and John Bell Hood. The fort was later abandoned, and much of its stone was carried off by local settlers for their own buildings.

Today, a reconstructed officers' quarters stands on the original foundations, surrounded by traces of other buildings and wide views over the Hill Country. It is a short, easy stop, and a great excuse to explore Mason's historic courthouse square, grab a bite in town, and drive the backroads toward the Llano River. Go near sunset, when the sandstone glows and the hills fade into blue.
