Check out the size of this fungus we found on our trails.
This is Calvatia gigantea, and this isn't even as big as it can get. If you can't tell in the pic, it was nearing volleyball size. This fungus is commonly known as the giant puffball. While normally they are quite round, it looks like the stick affected how this one was growing. These are an edible mushroom popular with foragers. Always use extreme caution when foraging for fungus, it's best left to the experts.

There are still summer visitors around!

This cool critter was on a porch rail in town. This is a native species, Scudderia spetentrionalis, the Northern Bush Katydid.

Katydids are related to crickets and grasshoppers, but more closely to the crickets, even though to us they look more like a green grasshopper.

There are 6400 species of katydids worldwide, with most in the tropic regions.

This bush katydid has a complex song, is nocturnal, and eats leaves. This one was near a porch light, which is how it ended up being seen during the day. It quickly moved on to a nearby tree after being spotted.
