Today, we honor and celebrate the life, legacy, and impact of a true giant in our community—Demetrious St. John, the visionary founder of the Stark County Black Caucus in 2002.

Demetrious was more than a leader—he was a movement. He understood early on that real change doesn’t just happen in conversation, it happens with boots on the ground. Election after election, year after year, he showed up—organizing, mobilizing, and fighting to ensure that every voice was heard and every vote counted. From presidential campaigns to local races, he was a driving force behind the scenes, helping candidates succeed and empowering communities to stand up and be counted.

His passion for voter rights was unmatched. His commitment to justice was unwavering. And his influence reached far beyond Stark County—opening doors and creating opportunities for many of us to sit at tables we once only dreamed of. Because of him, I had the honor to be in rooms with some of the greatest political leaders of our time—President Obama, President Clinton, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and many more.

But beyond all of his accomplishments, what I will cherish most is what he poured into me personally. He taught me politics. He mentored me. He trusted me. And when the time came for him to step down as President of the Stark County Black Caucus, he placed that trust in me to carry the vision forward.

That was not just a transition—it was a charge.

Demetrious, your work was not in vain. Your seeds are still growing. Your voice still echoes in every call to action, every campaign organized, and every vote cast.

Take your rest. Job well done.

We wiil continue to lead. We will continue to fight. We will continue to build. And We will carry the Stark County Black Caucus forward in your honor—keeping your legacy strong for generations to come.
