New Jersey’s Philip Freneau — the “Poet of the American Revolution” — used his pen as a weapon for liberty. Through poems and essays, he rallied Americans to the cause of independence. In 1791 he became editor of the National Gazette, a newspaper that helped shape political debate in the young republic. A proud part of New Jersey’s Revolutionary story, his words still echo the spirit of freedom. 🇺🇸 📜

“The rising world of waters dark and deep; No more shall awe the sons of freedom’s keep.”
— from “The Rising Glory of America” (1771)

Meet the New Governor SAME as the Old one...

To our retired first responders: Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. As the authors & prime sponsors of A1168, which reinstates automatic COLAs for retirement benefits, we remain steadfast in our fight for the cost-of-living adjustments you deserve. We won’t stop until it’s done.

STATEMENT: Asm. Rob Clifton, Assistant Minority Leader

As Assistant Minority Leader of the Assembly Republican Caucus, I appreciate Governor Sherrill's candor in yesterday's press conference, where she highlighted the serious fiscal challenges ahead of her Budget Address on March 10th—including the state's structural deficit where spending exceeds revenues by $3 billion annually, the risk of rapidly depleting our reserves in just a couple of years, and the need for significant spending cuts to address these imbalances.

However, it's worth emphasizing that our caucus has been warning about these exact issues—unsustainable spending levels, mounting structural deficits, and the erosion of fiscal reserves—for years, long before they reached this critical point.

I sincerely hope the Governor will now seriously consider constructive suggestions from our Caucus, and work collaboratively to rein in wasteful spending, reduce our mounting debt, and implement real reforms to restore fiscal discipline. Most importantly, she must uphold her clear promise against raising or adding any new taxes or fees on New Jersey's hard-working residents, who are already overwhelmed by the highest taxes in the nation and a crushing cost of living. True leadership means prioritizing families and rejecting the same failed approaches that got us here—let's work together for meaningful solutions that put affordability first.

Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Matawan Republicans honor the legacy of Dr. King—a courageous leader whose tireless pursuit of justice, equality, and service continues to inspire Americans of all backgrounds.

One of his powerful messages reminds us:
**“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”**

In our community and beyond, let’s embrace this wisdom by committing to kindness, integrity, and positive action in our daily lives—building a stronger Matawan one respectful step at a time.

We are all part of the same American dream. Let’s live it with purpose and grace. 🇺🇸
