STATEMENT: Asm. Rob Clifton, Assistant Minority Leader
As Assistant Minority Leader of the Assembly Republican Caucus, I appreciate Governor Sherrill's candor in yesterday's press conference, where she highlighted the serious fiscal challenges ahead of her Budget Address on March 10th—including the state's structural deficit where spending exceeds revenues by $3 billion annually, the risk of rapidly depleting our reserves in just a couple of years, and the need for significant spending cuts to address these imbalances.
However, it's worth emphasizing that our caucus has been warning about these exact issues—unsustainable spending levels, mounting structural deficits, and the erosion of fiscal reserves—for years, long before they reached this critical point.
I sincerely hope the Governor will now seriously consider constructive suggestions from our Caucus, and work collaboratively to rein in wasteful spending, reduce our mounting debt, and implement real reforms to restore fiscal discipline. Most importantly, she must uphold her clear promise against raising or adding any new taxes or fees on New Jersey's hard-working residents, who are already overwhelmed by the highest taxes in the nation and a crushing cost of living. True leadership means prioritizing families and rejecting the same failed approaches that got us here—let's work together for meaningful solutions that put affordability first.
