💗 Remembering Dolly Parton 💗

There are some people who seem to leave the world a little brighter simply by being in it. Dolly Parton was one of those people.

A legendary singer and songwriter, a storyteller, an author, a philanthropist, and a champion of children and literacy, Dolly understood something that libraries know well: stories have the power to change lives.

Through her beloved Imagination Library, Dolly helped put books into the hands and homes of millions of children, nurturing a love of reading and giving young imaginations room to grow. She once described the program as a way to help children “chase their dreams.” What a beautiful legacy. 📚❤️

And, of course, Dolly gave us so many stories of her own—through music, film, books, laughter, and a lifetime of generosity.

To celebrate her extraordinary life and work, hoopla has curated a special Dolly Parton collection, with her music, movies, audiobooks, ebooks, and more—all available to borrow instantly with your library card. 🎶📖🎬

Dolly once said, “Storms make trees take deeper roots.” Her roots ran deep—and through the countless lives she touched, her music, her kindness, and her love of books and children will continue to grow for generations.

Thank you, Dolly, for all the stories.
We will miss you. 🌸

Saturday, August 29th, 5-7:30 pm, Lake Lefferts Park:
The Great Whaleboat Races of 2026 - Mayors on the Move: The Ultimate Lake Battle! Three towns. Three whaleboats. One legendary mission.

(From the Borough of Matawan, NJ Facebook posts) In honor of Capt. William Marriner’s daring 1778 whaleboat raid, the Matawan Historical Society NJ and Keyport Historical Society will join forces with teams from Matawan Borough, Aberdeen Township, and Keyport Borough to paddle across Lake Lefferts to pick up Mayors Altomonte, Cannon, and Araneo from a floating dock and row them safely back to shore. The first team to return their mayor to the banks and raise their flag wins the coveted Golden Oar Trophy!
Come out for live music, awesome food, and the hilarious spectacle of local leaders being heroically rowed to victory. Which town is taking home the Golden Oar?

And while the mayors are waiting to be rescued, there will be plenty of fun kid-themed races during the event, including:
Water Balloon Toss, Sponge Relay Race, and, for kids ages 10–13 can race RC boats from 5:30–6:15 PM. Registration onsite for the RC Boat Race. We’ll recognize the top three finishers in the RC boat race and the 3–9 kids’ races.

In addition to the kids’ races, we will have a Patriotic Obstacle Course & 3-in-1 Game inflatables for kids to burn off some energy as well as members of the Matawan Aberdeen Arts Society teaching kids how to make their own Origami boat.

And you won’t miss a minute of the Great Whaleboat Race! A drone will fly over the racecourse and provide a live feed to the 20-foot LED screen, giving everyone a great view of the action from shore.

All event activities are FREE! See you this Saturday, August 29 from 5-7:30 at Lake Lefferts Park. Bring the kids and come cheer on your town!
