Despite, it being 96 degrees at 7PM last night, Matawan Recreation wants to give a big shout-out to 40 North who put on a great show at Hourihan Field; and to all who braved the heat- thanks for coming out. We are looking forward to the next 3 Wednesdays where we will be showing Toy Story4 on 8/5, JAWS on 8/12 (AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR MATAWAN), and we are hosting a Jimmy Buffet cover band Parrotbeach on 8/19. All shows will be at Hourihan Field which we have found is a great size to keep everyone socially distanced. Many thanks to Councilwoman Stephanie Buckel who welcomed 40North as well as our concert viewers. Matawan Recreation would also like to say thanks to Councilman John Lazar, Matawan Police and of course our wonderful DPW.

The Recreation Department's Paint the Borough Red, White, and Blue Contest ended this past weekend. It ran from May 4th through July 4th. It was a way to show our patriotism and also our appreciation to our veterans, first responders, and essential workers.
Thank you to all our participants. We appreciated the time you took to decorate and register your homes. We were delighted to see the clever ways in which you all used flags, bunting, lights, and other elements to "paint" your homes red, white, and blue! All of you helped make this an interesting and successful event!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of witnessing a wonderful tribute to a Dad whose life was sadly lost in April to COVID-19. His sons are an amazing legacy that speaks volumes of the man he must have been. Doug and Justin Preston, the young men who chose to open their business, The Geekery in Downtown Matawan 2 years ago are true assets to our community. Since opening their doors, they have volunteered their time serving on committees, at community events like National Night Out, Make Music Day, Downtown Trick or Treating, and Matawan Day and for Recreation programs.
Yesterday was different though. They decided to build and donate a little library at the Lakefront for the benefit of everyone. Take a book and leave a book is how it works. It was given to the Borough of Matawan and dedicated in memory of their father...a fitting tribute for Father's Day to a Dad that supported them and their business wholeheartedly.
Thank you to The Geekery for reminding us what it means to be fully invested in your community, and for your generous gift and service. We wish you and The Geekery continued success in the years ahead and many happy reading hours with those sharing in the Lakefront Little Library.
Watch for individual posts about each class in the series.
Downtown Matawan is beginning to show signs of life after the COVID-19 shutdown. Some great changes too. The new restaurant taking over Bart's is almost ready to open. They are finishing up a new patio. Maloney's has gotten a facelift with new windows, floors, paint, an expanded menu, and a beautiful new patio and lawn. The lawn will soon hold a tent for tables and chairs ready for dining.
Merchants are open like The Geekery and Tiffani's Vintage Closet. Stop in to see them. They are there ready to help you find some great things for Father's Day this weekend!
All throughout the Borough, Matawan restaurants are preparing for outdoor dining while retail businesses are opening their doors to you.
