Today, members of the Matawan Fire Department and beyond trained and recertified in ice water rescue. This is a very low-frequency call but carries a very high risk. With that being said, the Matawan Fire Department reminds you…
🚨 Stay Off the Ice! Stay Safe! 🚨
As temperatures rise , frozen lakes and ponds may still look tempting for walking, skating, or playing—but they can be extremely dangerous!
Even if the ice looks solid, it may not be strong enough to support your weight. Ice thickness can vary due to temperature changes, currents, and hidden weak spots. Every year, people fall through thin ice, putting their lives at risk and endangering the firefighters and rescue teams who respond.
What You Need to Know:
✅ Ice is never 100% safe. Appearances can be deceiving.
✅ Cold water is deadly. Falling through ice can lead to hypothermia in minutes.
✅ Once you go under you may not find your way back up.
Stay Safe:
❌ Never walk or play on frozen lakes or ponds.
❌ Keep pets away from ice-covered water.
❌ If someone falls through, call 911 immediately—do NOT attempt a rescue yourself.
Let’s prevent tragedies before they happen. Stay off the ice and stay safe!
