Historic Matewan (Official)

Historic Matewan (Official) Matewan, West Virginia is a small town steeped in history and tradition. Matewan is the scene of the "Battle of Matewan" which left 10 dead and several wounded.

On February 18, 1997, the Matewan Historic District was designated by the United States Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. The designation was marked by a brief ceremony on May 19, 1997 -- Seventy-seven years after the infamous "Battle of Matewan".The National Park Service recognized Matewan as a National Historic Landmark due to the town's significance in "the history of

labor organization in America." The battle was the result of coal company detectives attempting to evict union workers from company housing. The gunfight at Matewan was a pivotal event in the eventual end of coal company control in West Virginia. Matewan is host to many popular local events, such as the Annual Magnolia Fair, the Massacre Reenactment, and Homecoming, which this year will include its 17th annual car show.
