Please join us in celebrating August's Employee of the Month, Nurse Lavessia Allian!

Lavessia recently demonstrated exemplary clinical judgment and patient advocacy during a procedure requiring contrast. While reviewing the patient’s chart and conducting her assessment, she discovered conflicting allergy documentation—one note described a mild reaction, while another recorded a severe, potentially life-threatening response. Lavessia took the extra step to verify the allergy history directly with the patient, who confirmed a severe reaction that required premedication, which had not been ordered.

Recognizing the significant safety concern, Lavessia immediately notified the provider and the procedure was canceled before any harm could occur. Her diligence and quick action prevented a potentially dangerous allergic reaction and a costly emergency, underscoring the importance of thorough review and clear communication in Veteran care.

Lavessia’s attention to detail and commitment to patient safety reflect the highest standards of nursing practice. She protected her patient, averted a sentinel event, and safeguarded VA resources.

👏 Congratulations, Lavessia! Thank you for your dedication to our Veterans and for exemplifying excellence in nursing and patient advocacy. Your commitment truly makes a difference!

International Overdose Awareness Day | August 31

Together, we can save lives.

Every life matters. Every person matters. And every one of us has a role to play in preventing overdose.

Today - August 31st - join VA Northern California Health Care System in recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day and take a moment to:

REMEMBER. Those we’ve lost.
SUPPORT. Those affected by overdose.
PREVENT. Through education, awareness and harm reduction.
ACT. Because one action can help save a life.

Free naloxone (Narcan) kits and fentanyl test strips will be available at VA Northern California locations in Sacramento, Martinez, Chico, Redding and Stockton.

You don’t have to have all the answers. Learning how to recognize and respond to an overdose can make a difference.

💜 Together, we can save lives.
