Mathews County Historical Society, Inc. The Mathews County Historical Society, Inc. began preserving the rich history of Mathews County, Virginia more than 50 years ago.

The Society’s Objectives:

Acquire by purchase, lease, gift or otherwise, sites, buildings, structures, objects, records and documents of historic interest in Mathews County and region, and to preserve, restore and maintain the same. Seek, collect, compile and document all available information relating to the history and facts relating to these historic objects. Promote the discussion, exhibitio

n and visitation of these historic properties, and where appropriate, the display of such records and documents and the publication of information concerning them. Solicit gifts of real or personal property for these purposes, which gifts shall be exempt from the payment of income taxes. Educate and inform the people of Mathews County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Provide an organized presence for a historical perspective in Mathews County life and activities

Sad news just now: Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80. We look back to when she performed at Donk's Theater in Mathews in 1976.

Our next Music on Maple is scheduled for October 9 at the Thomas James Store and Mathews Memorial Library Courtyard!

Join us for our fall Music on Maple event, featuring music by Rae the Band. Rae the Band is a soulful, funky, blues influenced band from NYC. They blend sounds of 60's soul, electric blues, and classic rock through their original music alongside specially selected covers. We will have a food truck, and featured beverages.

Tickets will be available for purchase in the near future at the Mathews Visitor Center. Stay tuned!

This event is sponsored by and benefits MCVIC and MCHS.

MCHS has enjoyed hosting Mathews students at the Tompkins Cottage for their end of the school year field trips.

Thomas Hunter seventh graders enjoyed a field trip to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond. Students took guided tours through three exhibits: We the People, Our Commonwealth, and The Story of Virginia. Students enjoyed a picnic lunch in the museum district after the tour.

This trip was funded by the Mathews County Historical Society, and pictured is Marymac Hoffman with the students in the Tompkins Cottage Museum.
