September 1st marks National Police K9 Day, which is observed every year honoring working police dogs and memorializing those who died in the line of duty.
This day was established in 2016, and provides U.S. law enforcement agencies a dedicated day to recognize the vital work of police K9s — dogs trained to detect narcotics and explosives, track suspects, locate missing persons, and provide comfort to those in need.
This day also serves as a day to remember the working K9s who have passed away. We acknowledge the risks our K9's face, including gunfire and heatstroke, and we appreciate all that our four-legged partners do to better keep our communities safe.
