1836 - Information about the Matoaca Manfacturing Company from the Farmer's Register Volume 111 of 1836. While this may be hard to read, it does give a good word-picture of birth of Matoaca Village.
Construction of the mills began in 1834. At the time of this article the mills were nearing completion, with start-up operations to begin within a month. The milling complex would expand to include a paper mill by 1838, and would ultimately include 4 manufacturing buildings, plus the Picker House, Office with Store, Infirmary, a cotton shed, and an oil shed. With the expansion of the milling complex, came more double-tenement housing for workers and larger, single family housing for Managers and Supervisors.
Of the original granite structures, only the Infirmary, Picker House, and Office & Store building remain, the latter two now being private residences. The manufacturing buildings were sold and dismantled in the mid-1940's.

1942 - After being closed for 20 years the remaining Matoaca Mill properties to be sold at liquidation auction -
The machinery of the Matoaca mill was sold shortly after closing down, and most of the manufacturing buildings had been taken down piecemeal and sold for repurposing elsewhere. At the time of this sale about all that remained was Building Number 4 (made mostly of brick with spinning on 1st floor and weaving on 2nd floor), the Cotton Shed (made of brick), the Picker House, Office Building and Infirmary (all made of stone and all still standing), and numerous dwellings throughout the Village (wooden frame tenements of which many are still standing) -

December 14, 1832 - This is the actual petition filed by Mordecai Barbour to the Va. State Legislature Dept. of Agriculture and Manufacturing, asking for permission to form the joint-stock company under the name of Providence Mills. This of course was granted however, the name was soon changed to the Matoaca Manufacturing Company, and thus the Village of Matoaca followed two years later - The text of this document is attached to the photocopies of the front and back pages shown here - click on the pictures to read the texts -
