Sorry, we haven't posted much lately. It's been a little busy with work and other stuff. The department has been busy over the last month with several fire calls. The spring and summer were tranquil, but fall is coming in with a roar. We have assisted with mutual aid to two building fires in Medway and also a building fire in Mattawamkeag. All three fires resulted in total losses for all three properties. No injuries were reported, and one building was an abandoned building, and the others were occupied at the time of the fires.
Due to the drought and the extremely dry conditions this late summer into the fall, burning permits have been limited. Even though the recent rains have lowered the fire danger, the state as a whole remains in a severe drought. Now that the leaves have fallen, the dry conditions make for an accident waiting to happen. If you take out a burning permit when this is allowed, extra precautions must be taken to prevent the spread of those fires. The soil is still bone dry, and a couple of windy days can dry out the leaves, the other litter on the ground, and ignite easily.

Also, a reminder that the wood-burning season is upon us, and get your chimneys cleaned before the real cold weather and snow arrive. Chimney cleaning services are extra busy this time of year, so call early and prevent an inadvertent fire that could cost you your home.

The holidays are coming fast, so everyone have a great holiday season and a safe one.

Due to the high Fire Danger today no open burn permits are being issued including online until the danger levels drop

08/14/2025

Due to the numerous wildland fires and extremely high fire danger all fire permits online or in person have been shut down until
We receive some decent rain. Caution needs to be taken when disposing of smoking materials especially from moving vehicles and the dry grass conditions. Several roadside fires have popped up in the past few days. Forest rangers and fire departments are stretched out throughout the state working multiple wildland fires. Please use due diligence during this time because significant rain is not expected in the near future.

Officials for the Town of Mattawamkeag are pleased to announce that they have been awarded a Safety Grant by the Maine Municipal Association Workers Compensation Fund in the amount of $3,000.00.

The Ed MacDonald Safety Grants and Scholarship provide financial assistance to members of the MMA Workers Compensation Fund to purchase safety equipment or services to assist in reducing the frequency and severity of workplace injuries. The grant programs are designed to prevent injuries and improve workplace safety for our Maine employees. The reduction in employee injuries also benefits the taxpayers by lessening lost hours at work, cost of claims and potential overtime expenses for employees who might have to fill in for injured co-workers.

The Maine Municipal Association has been awarding Safety Grants to members of the Workers’ Compensation fund since 1999. The Ed MacDonald Safety Grants and Scholarships are an example of a successful partnership that has been preventing workplace injuries by bestowing more than $6.9 million committed in the funding of 4,547 Safety Grants and 569 Scholarship. Together we are building safe communities.
