Delineators and pavement markings for the Northeast Parkway two‑way protected bike lane are now in place ✔

Northeast Parkway has long lacked safe bike connections, and its narrow sidewalks haven’t worked well for both walkers and cyclists. The new protected bike lane helps close that gap and creates a safer, more comfortable way for cyclists to move through the corridor, while also linking to future projects like the Sam Newell sidepath and Independence Boulevard widening. Creating these connections now helps avoid a future “missing link” in the Town’s bicycle network.

The Matthews Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the Town’s Fiscal Year 2026–2027 Budget during its June 8 meeting.

This year’s $46.7 million balanced budget keeps the property tax rate at 27.95¢ per $100 valuation and maintains current stormwater fees. It reflects the continued commitment to delivering excellent services while making strategic investments in the areas that matter most to our community; public safety, transportation, infrastructure, and supporting employee retention and recruitment.

The new budget takes effect July 1, 2026 and the full Budget Book will be posted online once finalized.

Have you taken the Walk Matthews survey yet?

The Town’s new Pedestrian Plan will help identify sidewalk gaps, improve walking conditions, and guide future pedestrian projects throughout Matthews — and community input is a key part of the process.

Whether you walk for exercise, to get downtown, to school, or around your neighborhood, we want to hear about your experience and ideas for improvement.

Take the survey here: engagematthews.com/walk-matthews

Join us as the Town of Matthews celebrates Juneteenth on Thursday, June 18 at the Fullwood Theater inside the Matthews Community Center.

This year’s event features a screening of “The Language You Cry In,” a powerful documentary exploring family, memory, heritage, and connection through a song passed down from Sierra Leone to the Gullah Sea Islands of South Carolina.

The evening will also include a panel discussion, drum performances, vendors, and food as we come together to reflect, learn, and celebrate community.

5 PM: Doors open, vendors & refreshments

The Town of Matthews Appearance and Tree Advisory Committee is hosting a native milkweed sale to support our monarch butterflies. These beautiful pollinators depend on milkweed for survival — it is the only plant where monarchs lay their eggs and the only food source for monarch caterpillars. Planting milkweed also benefits bees and many other important pollinators in our community.

This will be a convenient drive-through plant sale. Follow directional signs at the entrances, and volunteers will load plants into your vehicle and collect payment (cash only).

Plants are limited to 10 per person, so arrive early for the best selection.
