For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, 9/11 Day has launched a movement to generate one million good deeds before September 11th. We're giving you 9 days to complete at least one of these 11 good deeds. What will YOU choose? Let us know in the comments!

Then, on Friday, September 11th from 10am-Noon, we will be hosting a 9/11 Day of Service, Good Deed Seed Collecting event and we're inviting the community to join us. Whether you can be here the whole time or maybe just 15 minutes, we encourage you to stop by the Douglas-Hart Nature Center and join the movement. Spending time in nature can be a deeply grounding and healing way to honor and reflect on the events of September 11, 2001.

That's right! Our founder, Helen Douglas-Hart, and the late, great Dolly Parton have something in common: both were honored with the title of Kentucky Colonel.

What does that mean, you may ask? According to the Governor of Kentucky's website, it is "the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Colonels are Kentucky's ambassadors of goodwill and fellowship around the world."

While living in Kentucky, Helen received the honor from then-Governor Julian M. Carroll on May 19, 1976. Unfortunately, her certificate was damaged in the flood we had a few years ago, but we'll share it in the comments.

On August 26, 2024, Governor Andy Beshear bestowed the honor upon Dolly while she was in Lexington to celebrate the statewide expansion of her free book program, Imagination Library.

We are thankful for the legacy Helen and Dolly left behind. Without a doubt, these trailblazing women both showed the true spirit of goodwill, generosity, and leadership.

"If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader." - Dolly Parton
