On Sunday afternoon, the Mauldin Police Department responded to the Mauldin GateWay Bridge for a report of a sign that had fallen from the bridge onto I-385 and nearly caused a collision. While responding to this incident, we observed a man running across all three lanes of traffic on I-385 to retrieve the sign and then running back across the interstate. We made contact with this individual and gave him a verbal warning.

Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident, but situations like this are highly dangerous and threaten public safety. We want to take this time to remind everyone of the rules regarding use of the Mauldin GateWay Bridge to ensure the safety of protestors, motorists traveling on I-385 and people using the bridge for recreational purposes:

๐Ÿ”น Signs larger than 4 square feet are prohibited on the bridge. Smaller signs are allowed on the bridge but should be held firmly at all times.

๐Ÿ”น Affixing, leaning or placing signs in a way that could damage the safety barrier is prohibited.

๐Ÿ”น Hanging signs over the edge of the bridge is prohibited.

๐Ÿ”น NEVER cross the highway on foot. This is illegal in South Carolina.

Please help us keep everyone safe by following these rules when using the bridge. We appreciate your cooperation!

Weโ€™d like to highlight the swift work of our officers to apprehend a bank robbery suspect this morning and keep our community safe.

At 10:57 a.m., the Mauldin Police Department responded to a bank robbery on E. Butler Rd. The suspect ran to a nearby apartment complex, where he was tracked by K9 Ryker and his handler Corporal D. Fazio and arrested. By noon, MPD had the suspect in custody.

Daniel Brandon Cooner, 34, of Mauldin has been charged with bank robbery and is currently being held at the Greenville County Detention Center.

Big thanks to K9 Ryker ๐Ÿพ and Cpl. Fazio, our officers and dispatchers for their commitment to protecting and serving this community.

Our hearts are heavy today as we stand alongside the Greenwood Police Department, mourning the profound loss of one of their own.

There are no words deep enough to encompass the grief of a family suddenly missing a piece of their soul, or a department losing a brother in arms. As they navigate these coming days of unimaginable shadows, please hold the officerโ€™s family, friends, and fellow officers close to your heart.

May they find a small measure of peace in our shared gratitude, and may we never forget the light this officer brought to their community.

Rest easy. We have the watch from here.

UPDATE | We have received and approved an application for Sunday's protest. We look forward to a peaceful protest on Sunday and wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day!

---------

The Mauldin Police Department is aware of a planned protest on the Mauldin GateWay Bridge this Sunday, May 10. Because we have not received any direct communication about this protest and no permit or application for this protest has been filed, we wanted to provide information about the rules regarding protests to ensure a safe and orderly experience for everyone.

Per our code of ordinances, groups of 20 or more individuals in a planned or organized group are required to obtain a permit if theyโ€™re intending to use any public trail, public bridge or public property for demonstration purposes.

โœ… That means any protest involving 20 or more people on the Mauldin GateWay Bridge this Sunday would require a permit. The link to that permit application is here:https://cityofmauldin.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/GateWay-Bridge-Final-Application-v2-Final.pdf

We also have rules regarding signage and demonstrations that we want to ensure people are aware of:

๐Ÿ”น Signs larger than 4 square feet are prohibited on the bridge. Smaller signs are allowed on the bridge, but may not be projected towards traveling motorists below.

๐Ÿ”น Affixing, leaning or placing signs in a way that could damage the safety barrier is prohibited.

๐Ÿ”น No person is allowed to engage in any demonstration or expressive conduct on a public trail that blocks or impedes the free passage of other users.

๐Ÿ”น Demonstrators must leave a minimum of five feet of unobstructed width on any public trail to allow for the safe passage of other users, including those on bicycles, wheelchairs or with strollers.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in a warning or citation.

โ„น๏ธ INFORMATION ON CITATIONS

To date, we have issued one warning citation for a large banner on the bridge and one verbal warning regarding signage.

Prior to issuing these warnings, our officers had numerous conversations with protesters over the course of several months to educate them about our ordinances related to signs and demonstrations. We are now stepping up enforcement in response to increasing complaints and concerns about public safety. We have specifically received complaints about the following:

๐Ÿ”น Banners and signs creating a distraction and safety hazard for drivers on 385, including lane departures and near accidents

๐Ÿ”น Banners and signs containing profanity

๐Ÿ”น Signs and other items being affixed to the bridge and causing damage to the bridge

๐Ÿ”น Bridge users feeling unsafe or threatened

While protesting is a fundamental and critical right that we fully support, we also have rules and processes that need to be followed to ensure a safe experience for everyone involved, including traveling motorists on I-385 and people using the bridge for recreational purposes.

Our goal is to ensure that peaceful protesting can continue while also upholding our ordinances and protecting the safety and well-being of the general public. Please help us create a safe environment for all by following the rules related to signage and demonstrations.

Thank you for your cooperation!

๐Ÿšซ Please Do Not Post Snipe Signs ๐Ÿšซ While we support small business and want businesses to be able to advertise their services, events and promotions effectively, please be advised that snipe signs are prohibited under zoning ordinance number 6:4.1.6 Prohibited Signs.

โ“ What is a Snipe Sign?

A snipe sign is a temporary sign that is tacked, nailed, posted, pasted, glazed, or otherwise affixed to a tree, pole, stake, fence, traffic control device, or another other object or the ground.

While snipe signs may seem harmless, they can damage property, create visual clutter and make it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to see important traffic and safety signage. These signs can pose safety risks, potentially blocking visibility at intersections and distracting drivers. They can also contribute to litter and environmental waste.

Please refrain from posting snipe signs and instead use authorized channels for advertising. For more information about acceptable signage, contact the Business & Development Services office at (864) 234-3475.

Thank you for helping us keep Mauldin clean, safe and orderly!
