We would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who joined us for Fire Station Story Time!

A special thank you to the Hatch Public Library for organizing such a wonderful event. We were honored to host and be a part of it!

It was great to see so many families come out, enjoy story time, and spend time at the fire station. Opportunities like this allow us to connect with our community. Especially the younger ones who may one day be in our boots!

We truly appreciate everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success. We hope you had as much fun as we did, and we look forward to the next one!

The Mauston Fire Department, EMS and police had the honor of welcoming Noah Coughlan as he made his way through our community on his journey running across America.

It’s always inspiring to see individuals push their limits and pursue something bigger than themselves. We are proud that Mauston could be one of the many stops along his incredible route.

On behalf of our department and the City of Mauston, we wish Noah continued strength, safety, and success as he travels through new cities, new states, and meets new people along the way.

Safe travels, Noah — Mauston is cheering you on! 🇺🇸🔥

WEATHER SAFETY REMINDER 🚨

With dangerously low temperatures expected, please take the following precautions to keep your family and home safe:

❄️ Limit time outdoors
Frostbite and hypothermia can occur quickly in extreme cold. Wear multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and bring pets indoors.

🔥 Protect your home from frozen pipes
Open cabinet doors to allow warm air around plumbing, let faucets drip slightly, and never use open flames to thaw frozen pipes.

⚠️ Use heating equipment safely
Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from combustibles. Never use ovens, grills, or generators indoors—this creates a serious fire and carbon monoxide risk.

If you have an emergency, call 911. Stay warm and stay safe.

EXPLODING TREES??? Not really, they just have a very dramatic reaction to the cold.

Trees don’t actually explode like in the movies, but during extreme cold (around -20°F or colder), they can crack loudly. Tree sap contains sugars that normally keep it from freezing solid, but when temperatures drop far enough, the sap freezes and expands. That pressure can cause the bark and wood fibers to split suddenly.

When it happens, it may sound like a gunshot or thunder — which is understandably alarming if you’re not expecting it.

The biggest concern is falling limbs, which can damage power lines, vehicles, or nearby property. The good news? Healthy trees usually recover just fine. Trees that are already stressed, or that experience severe cracking, may become hazardous and should be monitored.

If you live within the city limits and are concerned that your tree or trees may have been affected by the extreme cold, contact Jordan Wilke in the Parks Department and he will come give them a look-over.

Stay safe out there. Limit travel if possible.

3:20am Sun Dec 28: Moderate to heavy snow spreads from west to east today, lasting through tonight and into early Monday morning.

Highest amounts of 5-10 inches are expected north of Interstate 90, with there being a low chance (10-20%) that some locales could near a foot in west-central Wisconsin.

Strong northwest winds increase this afternoon, resulting in blowing snow areawide and blizzard conditions likely west of the Mississippi River this evening into the morning on Monday.

Finally, the rapidly falling temperatures this afternoon, combined with the warm and wet roads, could result in untreated roadways developing icy spots.

Bottom line, those with travel plans during this time should look for ways to avoid the storm.
