Yesterday Max Meadows Volunteer Fire Department held our end of the year dinner.

During the year of 2025 we answered 415 calls for service. Thank you to everyone in the community for the support and the volunteers for the time given to make this possible.

Time change has happened, so it’s always a good time to replace smoke alarm batteries and check the life of your existing alarms.

🚨 Test smoke alarms every month.
🚨 Replace batteries annually.
🚨 Replace smoke alarms every 10 years or when test has failed.

Red Cross has reached out and will be offering smoke alarms for FREE. Go to the website listed or call the number on the flyer.

Fall fire season is here, bringing increased fire danger to an already dry Virginia. Most wildfires are started by people, with escaped debris being the leading cause. Here are some key practices for preventing wildfires:

🚫 Avoid having outdoor fires on dry, windy days
🔥 Keep fires small and far from vegetation
🪣 Have tools and water on hand
📱 Have your phone ready to call 911 in case of an emergency
👀 Stay with your fire until it's out cold

Around 12 AM this morning Max Meadows Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to Interstate 77 NB at the 32MM for a vehicle fire. Engine 3 and Tanker 3 responded and found the trailer of a tractor trailer on fire. Both lanes of the interstate were shut down during operations. No injuries were reported. All units cleared shortly after.

Saturday we held our end of the year dinner to celebrate another year of service to conclude 2024. Thank you to everyone in the community and all of our members for making it possible.

Today around 1 p.m. Max Meadows Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the Pilot Station for a fuel spill. Rescue Engine 3 arrived and found 2 tractor trailers that had collided. The truck that was hauling diesel fuel had a puncture to the tank and was leaking heavy amounts of fuel. Virginia Department of Emergency Management was contacted with a Reigonal Hazmat response started. Wytheville Fire & Rescue Department was also dispatched to assist. No injuries were reported.

Today around 4 p.m Max Meadows Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire. Crews arrived on scene and found a single story commercial structure heavily involved. All occupants were out of the structure. Aggressive attack was then started with multiple lines. Mutual aid from Wytheville Fire & Rescue Department and Ivanhoe Volunteer Fire Department was called. The building was deemed a total loss and cause of the fire was undetermined. All fire units cleared with no injuries.

BOIL YOUR TAP WATER

Failure to follow this advisory could result in stomach or intestinal illness.

DO NOT DRINK TAP WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.

Boiled or bottle water should be used for drinking, beverage and food preparation, making ice until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Boiling is the preferred method to assure that the tap water is safe to drink. Bring all tap water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottle water.

If you cannot boil your tap water…

• An alternative method of purification for residents that do not have gas or electricity available is to use liquid household bleach to disinfect water. The bleach product should be recently purchased, free of additives and scents, should contain hypochlorite solution of at least 5.25%. Public health officials recommend adding 8 drops of bleach (about ¼ teaspoon) to each gallon of water. The water should be stirred and allowed to stand for at least 30 minutes before use.
• Water purification tablets may also be used by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
