PRESS RELEASE

DATE: December 6, 2021
FROM: Chief Arnold Amthor
TO: Press Sources

The Maybrook Police Department wishes to report two incidents that recently took place whereby alternative options were deployed to bring the events to successful conclusions.

• On December 3, 2021 at about 11:45AM officers responded to a call of an Unwanted Person/Trespassing. Upon arrival, a male subject was observed and displayed characteristics typical of being under the influence of narcotics and/or alcohol. Officers attempted to convince the subject to calm down, and voluntarily go by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation. The subject became more irate, disruptive and threatening towards officers. Eventually, despite repeated verbal attempts to de-escalate the subject, the Bola-Wrap was deployed once.

The discharge was successful, thereby permitting officers to safely, swiftly and successfully take him into custody without injury(ies) to himself and/or the officers. The subject was not arrested, and taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

• On December 4, 2021 at about 10:12AM officers responded to a Welfare Check at a residence. Upon arrival they observed a disruptive, highly disturbed and clearly threatening male subject. During the incident one officer deployed his Taser in order to safely de-escalate the situation, and take him into custody without further incident. Again, this subject was not arrested, and taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Both incidents, involving individuals who were threatening officers while displaying highly disturbing behaviors were successfully defused through the deployment of alternative options. In both cases, the subjects were not criminally charged, and instead were taken by EMS for mental health/drug evaluations.

The Maybrook Police Department has recently adopted a new General Order, entitled ‘Disclosure of Status Information’.

Mayor Dennis Leahy states, “Diversity is what makes the Village of Maybrook a special place to live. This new policy will serve as an example of the commitment and testament to our Community that its police department will make every effort to respect the dignity of all individuals who both reside and visit our village.”

Additionally, the Department has implemented ‘Right to Know Cards’, which are issued to every officer. These cards will be handed out by officers during their interactions with citizens.

The new General Order and business cards are the start of the Maybrook Police Department’s efforts to increase accountability and transparency in its day-to-day activities, with a focus on a true community-based policing philosophy. There will be several new announcements as additional items are implemented.

PRESS RELEASE

DATE: July 21, 2021

AUTHORITY: Chief Arnold Amthor

On July 21, 2021 at around 12:57 in the afternoon Maybrook Police Sergeant Maresca and Officer Erps responded to a residence in the Village for a report of an emotionally disturbed 14 year old juvenile with a knife. Upon the officer’s arrival, the juvenile was observed with a large sized chef’s knife in her hand demanding to be left alone and for officers to get away. After speaking with the juvenile for several minutes and pleading with her to put the knife down, the juvenile eventually did listen and put the knife down on the ground. Officers were then able to seize and safely secure the knife and ultimately arrange for the juvenile to be transported to Garnet Health for a mental health evaluation.

I would like to commend the actions of my officers as they were able to prevent a very difficult circumstance from becoming worse by quickly de-escalating the situation. Their ability to speak with the juvenile in a calm professional manner certainly aided in such a positive outcome. As a result of their professionalism no force was used to bring the juvenile into custody for the evaluation.

I would like to remind the public that our Police Officers and other Officers throughout the country unfortunately have to deal with situations just like this incident on a routine basis. Although the outcome in this case ended positively, every incident is not the same as circumstances can often dictate different outcomes.
