We are pleased to share that Chef Jim Perko, Executive Chef at the Cleveland Clinic and a specialist in culinary medicine and wellness, presented at the Mayfield Heights Fire Department on May 13, 2026.

Chef Perko shared practical strategies to help first responders build long-term healthy lifestyles, including:

• Preparing balanced meals in advance to avoid processed foods and fast food
• Focusing on sustainable lifestyle habits over temporary diets
• Supporting cardiovascular health and operational readiness through clean eating

His presentation reinforced the importance of prioritizing first responder wellness to help maintain a healthier, safer, and more resilient community.

Stop the Bleed education saves lives. ❤️

In a serious emergency, severe bleeding can become life-threatening in just minutes. Stop the Bleed training teaches everyday people how to respond quickly by applying pressure, packing wounds, and using a tourniquet until first responders arrive.

These simple skills can:
✔ Save lives
✔ Build confidence during emergencies
✔ Improve workplace and community safety
✔ Help people stay calm and take action when it matters most

You never know when you may need these skills for a family member, coworker, friend, or stranger. Being prepared can make all the difference.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital recognized members of the Mayfield Heights Fire Department with a Challenge Coin for Excellence in Professional Standards, honoring their outstanding care and dedication.

Captain Mark Palumbo, Lieutenants Jeff Lanhan and TJ Zimmerman, and Firefighters Bill Madan, Kevin Costantino, Alex Brockway, and Lance Powers were recognized for their role in this lifesaving response.

After responding to a patient in cardiac arrest, the crew built on early bystander CPR to deliver exceptional cardiac care, helping the patient regain a pulse and spontaneous breathing. The patient was later discharged from Hillcrest Hospital with no lasting deficits.

This call is a strong reminder of how teamwork, training, and compassion can save a life. We’re incredibly proud of this crew and the difference they made.

The Mayfield Heights Fire Department had the honor of swearing in two members today. The ceremonies were officiated by Mayor Diane M. Snider.

Matt Bobinski was sworn in as Assistant Chief (effective January 26, 2026), and Nicholas Martinitis was sworn in as our newest firefighter on March 6, 2026.

Assistant Chief Bobinski began his career with the Mayfield Heights Fire Department in 2008 and was promoted to Lieutenant in January 2024. Throughout his career, he has been highly involved within the department, serving on the MH Honor Guard and working as a Fire and EMS Instructor, CPR Instructor, Fire Safety Inspector, and Fire Cause and Origin Investigator. In his new role as Assistant Chief, he will oversee the Fire Prevention Bureau and assist with daily fire operations.

Firefighter Martinitis previously served part-time with the City of Wickliffe and full-time with the City of Eastlake before joining the Mayfield Heights Fire Department. He was also the salutatorian of both his Fire and EMS academy classes, reflecting his dedication to the profession.

We congratulate both Matt and Nick, and wish them the very best as they begin this next chapter in their fire service careers.
