Hatchell to lead Cardinal Football

The new head of Mayfield Cardinal Football is a name long familiar with the program. Offensive Coordinator Stephen Hatchell has been tapped to lead the storied team.

“On behalf of the Mayfield Independent School District, I am honored to announce that Stephen Hatchell will be the next head coach of the Mayfield High School football program,” said Mayfield High School Principal Matt McMain.

Hatchell has served as Offensive Coordinator for the Cardinals since 2016. He started his coaching career with the team in 2007 first as the quarterback coach, then as the Cardinals Offensive Coordinator from 2008-2013. For the 2014-2015 seasons, Hatchell moved to Georgetown, South Carolina, where he was a quarterback coach then Offensive Coordinator there before moving back to Mayfield where he resumed his OC duties.

Hatchell says he is excited to lead the team, “I would like to thank the hiring committee for giving me the opportunity to be the next head football coach at Mayfield High School. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly.” He added, “This program has a rich history, and I am excited to build upon the strong foundation already in place. My family and I love this community and are thrilled to continue to serve our school and community.”

McMain says the school district, the community, and the football program have a strong tradition of excellence, “Coach Hatchell knows this legacy and is committed to maintaining that standard. I am excited about the future of Mayfield football with him at the helm.”

Once a student-athlete himself, Hatchell played on the collegiate level. Hatchell was on the quarterback roster for Murray State University from 2001-2003, then for Campbellsville University from 2004-2005.

Hatchell also serves as vice principal at Mayfield High School. He and his wife, Tyler, have a daughter, Zoey, and a son, Zander.

Looking ahead, Coach Hatchell says to the players, parents, and alumni, “I will work tirelessly to make you proud both on and off the field. I am excited about the future of this program and my role in helping our young men become the best version of themselves. GO CARDINALS!"

Academic hard work and the mentors who support it were the focus of the recent STAR Student and Students of Distinction Ceremony, hosted by the Mayfield-Graves County Chamber of Commerce.

The event, held at Mayfield High School, gathered families and educators to celebrate top-performing seniors from both Mayfield and Graves County high schools.

STAR Students are those seniors who earned a score of 28 or higher on the ACT, while Students of Distinction are seniors who have taken the most rigorous high-level classes on their path toward Valedictorian status.

A central part of the evening involved the students naming a teacher, counselor, or mentor who made a significant impact on their education.

STAR Students and their teachers were:
Elida Baten, who chose Mrs. Jaime Moyers
Avery Creason, who chose Mrs. Kayla Jones
Jayden Glisson, who chose Mr. Darrin Abren
Thayer Henley, who chose Mr. Roy Henley
Madelyn Massey, who chose Mr. James McCann
Reid Wheeler, who chose Mr. Jerrod McMillin
Micah Wyatt, who chose Mrs. Kara Dowdy

Students of Distinction and their teacher were:

Avery Creason, who chose Mrs. Kayla Jones
Keely Henson, who chose Mrs. Lynn Henderson
