***UPDATE: ALL CLEAR****

The fire alarm this morning at MHS has been cleared and all students are back in the building. Thanks to the Mayfield Fire Department for the quick response.

We want to make parents aware of a situation at Mayfield High School today, September 28, 2026. Fire alarms are going off and we have evacuated the school out of an abundance of caution. We believe it could be an issue with an HVAC system and will work to confirm that once all students and staff are out of the building. Fire trucks are at MHS. All staff and students are safe and there is no need for concern.

Mayfield High School sophomore Arya Anderson has been selected for the inaugural 2026-27 cohort of the Civic Leadership Institute, a new multiyear program that prepares Kentucky high school students for future leadership in law, government, public policy, history, education, public service and other civic-minded fields.

Anderson is one of 20 students in the cohort at the Western Kentucky University Center for Gifted Studies in Bowling Green. The institute also runs a second site at the University of Louisville McConnell Center.

Selection was competitive. The institute's first year drew 126 applications from 37 school districts and 54 high schools and academies across the state. Applicants were evaluated on academic achievement, leadership experience, civic interests, community involvement and thoughtful engagement with differing viewpoints.

This school year, participants will attend six Saturday sessions with hands-on work in government, public policy, historical thinking, communication and leadership development. The cohort's first session is Saturday.

In later years, students will move into more advanced work, including policy analysis, mock trials, legislative drafting, media literacy, negotiation and advocacy. They will also have chances to attend summer programming. The program ends with a senior capstone experience in Washington, D.C.

"There are incredible young people across Kentucky who are interested in government, history, law, public policy, leadership, and serving their communities," said Justin Mitchell, founder and director of the institute. "The Civic Leadership Institute gives them a place to come together, challenge one another, learn from leaders in these fields, and begin discovering how they can use their own talents to make a difference."

The institute's guiding statement is "Think critically. Lead confidently. Serve purposefully."

Students in Mrs. Kara Dowdy's financial literacy class welcomed a very special guest on Sept. 22.

Mrs. Jessica Rogers Tucker, a 1998 graduate of Mayfield High School and now a vice president at FNB Bank in Mayfield, visited the freshmen and sophomores enrolled in the course to discuss taxes.

As students prepare to enter the part-time work force, all had prepared questions ahead of her visit and learned necessary terms and skills needed to be successful when it's "tax time."

Mrs. Dowdy will continue the tax lesson throughout the school year while her students participate in the "Game of Life," a daily task to give students the skills needed to budget for bills like utilities and groceries while also taking into account career selection, family size, and life's unforeseen circumstances.
