💡 Did you know the poverty line is not one fixed amount for every household?

The U.S. Census Bureau uses different poverty thresholds based on a family’s size and composition. In 2024, the weighted average poverty threshold for a family of four was $32,130 per year—approximately $2,678 per month before taxes.

That monthly income may need to cover:

🏠 Housing🥗 Food🚗 Transportation💡 Utilities🩺 Healthcare🧸 Childcare👕 Clothing and other necessities

The official poverty measure is a statistical guideline. It does not fully account for differences in essential expenses or the actual cost of living from one community to another.

For many families, one unexpected expense can create a serious financial crisis. Behind every statistic are real people and real stories deserving dignity, understanding, and compassion.

About 1 in every 6 Graves County residents lives in poverty.

What does that mean? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 16.6% of our neighbors live in households with incomes below the federal poverty threshold.

For these individuals and families, covering basic necessities—such as safe housing, food, transportation, healthcare, childcare, and utilities—can be an ongoing struggle. An unexpected car repair, medical bill, reduction in work hours, or increase in rent may put stable housing at risk.

Poverty does not define a person’s value or potential. These are not simply numbers—they are women, children, families, and neighbors in our community.

By learning, listening, and responding with compassion, we can help create a stronger and more supportive Graves County.

🍓 What’s one thing you always try to keep prepped in your fridge during the summer? ☀️

One of my favorite summer tricks is prepping snacks before everyone gets hungry! That way, the family can just open the fridge and grab something fresh and ready to go. 🙌

It means less food waste, fewer last-minute drive-thru stops, and more of those fresh foods that just make summer feel like summer! 🍉🥒🍓

✅ Fact: Many different circumstances can lead to homelessness.

Job loss, illness, disability, domestic violence, family conflict, severe weather or disasters, rising housing costs, and unexpected financial emergencies can all contribute to housing instability.

Homelessness is a circumstance—not an identity. It does not determine a person’s worth, character, or potential.

When we learn the facts, use respectful language, and listen without judgment, we help create a more compassionate and supportive community.

Please share this post to help us challenge harmful assumptions and end the stigma surrounding homelessness.
