NAMI Kentucky: Buffalo Trace Affiliate

NAMI Kentucky: Buffalo Trace Affiliate Join us the 2nd Tuesday at 6:00pm in the Mason County Public Library. We meet the second Tuesday each month at 6:00pm in the Mason County Public Library.

NAMI is the "National Alliance on Mental Illness" and this is the official page of the Buffalo Trace Affiliate servicing the counties of Lewis, Mason, Fleming, Bracken, and Robertson. NAMI Ky. Buffalo Trace Affiliate aligns our goals with that of NAMI Ky. The families and members of NAMI Kentucky are here to help! We offer understanding to anyone concerned about mental illnesses and the treatment

of mental illness. Mental illnesses are brain disorders that are biologically based medical problems. Untreated, they can cause severe disturbances in thinking, feeling and relating. This results in substantially diminished capacity for dealing with the ordinary demands of life. Mental illness can affect persons of any age and occur in any family. They are not caused by bad parenting and not evidence of weakness of character. Mission:
Dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, education and advocacy. Our Goals:
Advocate at the county, state and national levels for non-discriminatory access to quality healthcare, housing, education and employment for people with mental illness. Educate the public about mental illness. Work to eliminate the stigma of mental illness. Advocate for increased funding for research into the causes and treatment of mental illness. Our Vision:
In our envisioned future mental illness will no longer thwart a person’s fulfillment of his or her potential. With early pinpoint diagnoses, interventions and targeted medications and services there is no pervasive disability. Ultimately, we envision a day when prevention or a cure is found.

This week, we would like to recognize Ashley Messer, Social Worker with the Maysville Police Department, for representing our community at the 2026 Kentucky State Fire School.

Ashley taught a powerful and much-needed class titled β€œStronger Minds, Stronger Service: Addressing the Mental Health Challenges of First Responders.” The course focused on the unique mental health challenges faced by firefighters and other first responders, including cumulative trauma, critical incident stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, and su***de prevention. Through evidence-based strategies, practical tools, and meaningful discussions, participants learned how to build resilience, support one another, and recognize the warning signs of stress injuries before they become life-altering.

The mental health and well-being of our first responders is just as important as their physical safety, and Ashley’s dedication to this mission is making a difference far beyond the City of Maysville.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a social worker of Ashley’s caliber serving within the Maysville Police Department. Her work positively impacts not only the citizens of Maysville but also first responders and communities across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. By sharing her knowledge and expertise at the state level, she is helping strengthen the fire service and public safety profession for generations to come.

Please join us in thanking Ashley Messer for her commitment, compassion, and leadership. We are proud to call her a partner in public safety and an ambassador for the City of Maysville.

Thank you, Ashley, for all you do for our community and for helping first responders across Kentucky build stronger minds and stronger service.
