The KACD is pleased to invite you to participate in an upcoming Licking River Work Unit Local Working Group Meeting in your area. This meeting provides an opportunity for agricultural stakeholders like you to share insights, discuss local resource concerns, and help guide conservation priorities and program implementation. The meeting also assists NRCS with identifying the key resource concerns in your area and submitting that information to the State Technical Committee for their consideration; but these meetings can also be of immense value to Conservation Districts. By holding these discussions with our local stakeholders, we can also identify current challenges experienced by the local landowners and explore strategies, from a local standpoint, to protect and sustain our natural resources.

2026 Mason County Conservation District Annual Awards Dinner highlighted in the Ledger Independent today.

Conservation District Supervisor and Team Coach Yvonne Garrison reported that the Mason County Envirothon Team competed at State Envirothon competition in Hardinsburg, Ky May 13-14, finishing in the top 8 (final scores will be posted later).

Also, Mason County student Sophia Mitchell, attending Gatton Academy, competed with her Gatton team who won first place and will be competing at nationals in Mississippi in July! Go Sophia!

Mason County Conservation District is proud of our school’s team accomplishments.

Mason County High School Envirothon students, inspired by their teacher and Conservation District Supervisor Yvonne Garrison, were interviewed by Travis Skaggs for "news and views" that aired on WFTM on Tuesday at 8 am. They talked about their accomplishments at regional competition and are looking forward to state competition. Mason County Conservation District is proud to sponsor the team!

Mason County District Supervisor Kirby Rosser volunteered his time and muscle to the May Day:Clean-Up Limestone Creek project in downtown Maysville.

35 tires and an immeasurable amount debris was cleaned from the bank and from the water while chain saws cleared invasive brush.

Help came from as far as Pendleton County and as close as up the street to make this one successful day!

STATE COMPETITION BOUND!
The Mason County Envirothon Team, led by their coach Mason County School Teacher and Conservation District Board Supervisor Yvonne Garrison, qualified at the regional competition for the 2026 Ky. State Envirothon Finals. They placed in the top five out of 38 teams.

When one wins in soil and water conservation, we all win!

Andrew Matheny with three generations of the Matheny family were awarded the Mason County District Outstanding Conservationist Award for Production Agriculture.

Janice Barnett-Gifford received the 2026 Mason County District Distinguished Service Award.

The Jim Claypool Conservation Art contest and Conservation Writing contest is sponsored by the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation in cooperation with the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts. The theme this year for competitors was “Wet Lands in Kentucky”.

The top three entries for the 2026 art contest for grades 1-5 with monetary awards from the District and Mason County Farm Bureau are:

First Place-Matthew Clarke, 5th Grade at St. Patrick school
Second Place-Amya Sartin, 5th Grade at St. Patrick school
Third Place-Addy Riley, 3rd Grade at St. Patrick School

The top three entries for the 2026 writing contest for grades 6-12 with monetary awards from the District and Mason County Farm Bureau are:

First Place-Kolby Galloway, Junior at Mason County High School
Second Place-Hannah Hahenschneider, Freshman at Mason County High School
Third Place-Victoria Flowers, Soohomore at Mason County High School

The Sixty-third Annual Dinner Meeting of the Mason County Conservation District is in the books with another winning year! Tasty dinner served by Day’s Catering assisted by the Mason County Future Farmers of America. Speaker Rusty Muse let attendees in on his Mt Lawley Farm endeavor from beginning to plans in the works.
Awards were given to Matheny’s as 2026 Master Conservationist and to Janice Barnett-Gifford for the Distinguished Service Award. Writing and Art School winners received their awards. Thank you to everyone for attending!
