✅REMINDER: The Chautauqua County Clerks Office, and our three county DMV locations (Dunkirk, Mayville, and Jamestown) will be closed Friday July 3, 2026 in observance of Independence Day.

✅UPDATE: On June 25, 2026 there were two incidents (one involving a non-county employee, and the second with a county employee not assigned to the clerk's office) with a self described 1st Amendment Auditor. Based on the circumstances of the altercation, both the non-county and county employees were charged in accordance with NYS Law. The County Clerk's office is fully cooperating with the Sheriff Department's ongoing investigation, and has no further information concerning the employees involved.

✅ In response to the incident(s), the clerk's office has reviewed and removed any obsolete and/or inaccurate signage. Additionally, ALL county employees, across all departments, were sent a reminder the taking of video and/or pictures in publicly accessible spaces in our county buildings is a protected Constitutional right under the 1st Amendment.

On Thursday, June 25, 2026, a self-described First Amendment auditor visiting the Chautauqua County Clerk's Office was involved in an altercation with a non-County employee in the records room.

Building security and the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident. No County employees were involved in the altercation.

The Chautauqua County Clerk is aware of the incident and is fully cooperating with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office as it investigates the matter.

Because this is an active investigation, no further information is available at this time.

A once-in-a-generation event is coming to Chautauqua County!

Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 — the world’s largest operating steam locomotive — will make a special whistle-stop in Ripley, NY next week on Tuesday, June 9 as part of its historic America’s 250th Anniversary Tour.

📍 State Street Crossing, Ripley
🕛 Arrives approximately 12:00 PM
🚂 Departs approximately 12:30 PM

Railfans, photographers, families, and history enthusiasts are encouraged to come out and witness this incredible piece of living American history. Please remember to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, follow posted detours, and stay safe around railroad property.

This marks Big Boy No. 4014's first East Coast tour and Chautauqua County is proud to be part of America's Semiquincentennial celebration!
