A once-in-a-generation event is coming to Chautauqua County!

Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 — the world’s largest operating steam locomotive — will make a special whistle-stop in Ripley, NY next week on Tuesday, June 9 as part of its historic America’s 250th Anniversary Tour.

🕛 Arrives approximately 12:00 PM
🚂 Departs approximately 12:30 PM

Railfans, photographers, families, and history enthusiasts are encouraged to come out and witness this incredible piece of living American history. Please remember to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, follow posted detours, and stay safe around railroad property.

This marks Big Boy No. 4014's first East Coast tour and Chautauqua County is proud to be part of America's Semiquincentennial celebration!

✅ The County Clerk’s Office, along with our three County DMV locations, will be closed on Monday May 25, 2026 in observance of Memorial Day.

🇺🇸 County Clerk issues first Veteran’s Peddler’s Permit in Chautauqua County to honorably discharged Army veteran and Dunkirk resident Kenneth DeLong.

🫡 Kenneth’s son Zakery called the office inquiring about the permit on behalf of his veteran father. This was not something our office had come across before, but after researching NYS General Business Law (GBS 32), we discovered it was a permit/license we were authorized by NYS Law to issue to certain veterans who’ve been a resident of the county for at least six-months.

🙏 The Chautauqua County Clerk’s office greatly appreciates Zakery DeLong for bringing this to our attention, and his Father Kenneth for his service to our country. SGT DeLong was issued permit #0001 in Chautauqua County, and has opened the door for this permit to fellow county veterans!

FRAUDULENT TOLL UPDATE:

🚗Numerous Chautauqua County residents have received toll bills from the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) & E-ZPass Tolls by Mail for tolls they did not incur. The victims of the recurrent fraudulent toll charges have been a combination of surrendered/destroyed plates, and plates still actively assigned to county residents.

✅Our office has assisted numerous residents dispute these erroneous tolls with the precise documentation requested by the MTA and E-ZPass tolls by mail. Additionally, we've open up numerous cases with the MTA Toll Payer Advocate to further assist disputes.

🚧Unfortunately, affected Chautauqua County residents continue to receive increasing fees, and warnings of "impending collections / legal action," despite repeated timely submission of unequivocal exculpatory evidence.

🛑This is unacceptable. The County Clerk has compiled documentation of the MTA's negligence to timely documented disputes, and this morning submitted the documentation to the Office of the MTA Inspector General. We've also been in contact with our state representatives concerning this matter.

⌛️Don't wait until your Birthday to renew your License.

🚦With the new NYS DMV Software now pulling records from other states, last-minute renewals can lead to unexpected issues.

📆In New York State, you can renew your driver's license up to one year before it's expiration date, and renewing early doesn't affect the expiration date of your new license.

🛑Out of state issues, even if in error, must be cleared prior to renewal.

🚧Don't risk being able to renew, give yourself some cushion to resolve an unexpected issue not previously flagged by the old DMV Software.
